It is the one thing I know I am experiencing the same as everyone else that eats it.

I've eaten spicy food before and determined that I don't like it. I just haven't had ghost peppers because I don't want to eat something I know I won't like and will suffer from.

I wouldn't day it is masochistic.
But anyway, how unfortunate.
Even in the face of pure and honest intentions of someone wanting to do something for someone else, that is commendable to stick to one's guns as it were.

I speak of Orihime Inuoe's feelings. Akira's are still out for verdict.

Pure and honest intentions are one thing, but they don't change that you could really hurt somebody with that chocolate.

To get philosophical, the same could be said for any pure and honest intentions. The application may be as it is, but I am willing to accept their feelings even if it may end poorly.
