retrospec | (no subject)

I know we've all been a bit distracted lately, not only from the abrupt loss of two colors from the spectrum, but all the usual school madness that occurs in June. Grades are coming in, summer sessions are about to begin, and that's an understandably stressful time.

[To say nothing of sleep loss. Rosalind certainly looks exhausted as she glowers into the camera. Behind her, chalkboards are filled with equations, and someone with a particularly clever mind might be able to spot a trend towards space and time.]

However. Let me give a few of you a piece of advice. I know several of you are in university right now, or about to graduate high school and enter into it. If you ever send a professor who failed you something like what I'm about to attach, you will not change their minds. Point in fact, they'll be even more determined to fail you. I know I certainly am, and I'm not even the one dealing with this right now.

What're some classifications?

Oh, the sports-inclined, for starters. Art students, you can tell those by the fact their wrists are in braces. Law students, who typically look miserable and exhausted. Those inclined towards the STEM fields, who typically are a bit too pale for their own good.

[A little pause, and then, just a touch snidely:]

And of course, there's the theater students.

Is a professor supposed to point out that all students are suffering...? Except the athletes, it sounds like.

A professor is allowed to point out what she'd like, especially on a day like today. And I assume all athletes suffer physically, but frankly I've never cared to ask.

It's not really suffering if you're pursuing a goal. And any athlete that whines about their hard training keeping them from their academics needs to do more of both.

What do you teach?

A fair few things: physics, primarily, as that's my specialty, but occasionally biology and chemistry as well.

You'll probably have me eventually, then. I like all those subjects.

[Her tone isn't friendly, precisely, but it certainly lightens a few notes as she hears that.]

A pleasure, Mr. Matsuoka. What do you like in physics?

[a pause, because she's probably looking for a precise answer, but he gives the honest one instead]

That everything's possible because of it. And 'cuz it's creative thinking for guys like me, who don't care about painting or reading some American Gothic novel, but wanna figure out how the universe works.

[That's . . . actually one of the best answers he could have given, well done Rin. Ros smiles faintly, though he can't see it.]

Have you learned the basics, then?

Yeah. I've been on a pretty advanced academic track since about middle school.

Then you oughtn't take the basics course; you'll be bored there, and there's no point in taking a class full of things you already know. Arrange to take a placement exam before you try registering.

Uh, sure. Do those happen over the summer?

They do, but it's a bit late to register. Fall courses, however, are still open, especially for the more advanced classes.
