Let's say, hypothetically speaking, that there was something quite expensive that you had wanted very much, and that someone purchased that something for you when they really didn't have to. Let's say that you could never hope to come up with the money to pay them back in full, but you would like to do something comparable for them for the holidays.

What would you do in such a situation?

I'm not certain that "better" applies. It's more that I'm looking for different ideas in hopes that something catches.

I would like to offer something special in return for their own efforts after all. I'm not likely to receive this same gift again. I'd like to offer them something unique here as well.

Then it may be best to think of the recipient of your gift, and ask yourself what sorts of things they might find special. Each person will have their own definition of that, after all.

I guess that's where I've come to you all for the assistance. It doesn't seem like just a book or a mug would be enough to convey the right sentiments in comparison.
