It's not a love song in the slightest.

A surface, superficial reading of the lyrics may indicate as much, but the song depicts a man so aware of his own pathetic nature and envy of a more "special" and "perfect" person they're attracted to that they ultimately realize what they are, but only through their personal lens. It is a song about failure, not about love.

It's a beautiful, memorable song. Even if someone has a wrong-headed idea of what it might mean, it's not a reflection of poor taste. The song is just as beautiful, when listened to from any perspective.
