OTA TEXT | SO WHERE Y'ALL AT????
[sometime on the third, all the names of people who were sent on group missions (obviously au names only) will be released onto the network for IC knowledge. everyone will be able to see this post if they glance at the network, whether they're in the city or away on groups!
however annotated next to the groups will be the information that group one is going to pesgare, group two is going to respartum, group three is going to bosuma, and group four is going to magatus.]
if you didn't get a call to arms here's the copypasta:
hard to do work when you don't have info right
carly's more useful than expected
but he said don't get distracted
anyway
the more you know and all that
[and that's the message!]
[ OOC: please use this as an open mingle for whatever purposes you need! unless directly addressed, baren won't be responding. he just bugged carly for info and shared it. if any adjustments need to be made, lmk!

How would you like to help us help you out? Your observation period's up and I want you on this particular assignment. You'll be fine, you're probably not going to die, and we'll be able to monitor you from here. We need help. You've got the skills needed even if you don't know it yet. I know it and that's what counts.
You'll be working with a group (wish I could give you the names, still putting the lists together), but your assignment partner is [INSERT RANDO HERE]. Should you choose to accept this assignment, you will need to meet at the [LOCATION] and we'll go from there.
You'll be rewarded for your success, of course, but this is only if we have an agreement. Do we have an agreement?

Baren can understand - he'd done the same thing with his sister, and the rest of the people who cared for him on the network received notice of where he was going. He'd placed his name out there with everyone else if only because it seemed like when shit hit the fan it was the one time that he had nothing to hide.... so he pulls up his phone and Matt can hear some tapping before Baren even answers as he fixes up the list.
Then in a cheery little note:] Done!
[That was easy.
But before Matt speaks again, Baren holds up a hand.]
You're right that I'm wondering - but your secrets are your secrets and your reasons are your reasons. If it has something to do with you beating up punks in the night, Cleo already spilled. In which case, you owe me nothing seeing as I think you're not doing anything wrong.
[He's not a judgmental person by default. There's a one-shouldered shrug as he drops his hand.]
We can just leave it as you owing me one if that's what you want.
But if the masked life is lonely and you need someone to listen - well, we can still look for firewood.
[Easy. Simple. Baren sneaks in an opportunistic chance for a deal but - other than that, why bother forcing Matt into sharing?]

[ Oh no. He manages to keep a straight face but there's a tiny hint of worry when he asks about it. ]
She saw my name didn't she?
[ But if she did why didn't she tackle him the moment he stepped out of the tent? Sorry Baren, your friendly talk about favors or listening get glazed over by the possible emergency at hand. Cleo would tell the others, Tatsuo and Togusa definitely. Tatsuo might be understanding but Togusa? Doubtful. As much as Matt enjoyed working with him and considered him a friend the man treated him like glass at times. He'd honestly make a great poster boy for oblivious albeism. ]

[And he sounds irritated about that? Yeah. Almost kind of disbelieving. Every single logical point says that obviously Matt is the costumed superhero but damn if she wasn't sticking to her guns. While he sort of admires that about 0.2% the other 99.8% just thinks it's downright dumb - but that's Baren for you.]
Which - you know, good for you, but wow. I wasn't try to fuck with your identity or anything but trust me I tried really hard to get her to see reason and it just wasn't happening.
So something tells me you don't have a lot to worry about. If she asks why your name's gone, I'll tell come up with something to cover your ass.

Thank you. This is incredibly important to me. I don't expect others to necessarily understand but I don't want to stop. Not yet anyway.
I'm... Confused about why she'd see the answer and refuse to believe it. I guess the fact I'm blind makes it seem that impossible?
[ That thought is both amusing and frustrating. ]

[It's his opinion anyway - it might be the blindness, but after talking with her enough...]
She hates vigilante justice, she likes.... [A gesture to his general person. Baren won't say his name out loud now that they've agreed to wipe it from the files.] You. She likes you, or who she thinks you are. Reconciling the two is impossible for her because she doesn't want someone she likes to become something she hates, so she refuses to believe it.
Which is dumb? What you're doing isn't that bad.
[ - even if Matt doesn't expect Baren to understand, he at least isn't judging. Rather, he still sounds confused.]
I don't get people who try to dictate how others live their lives. But it might be the blindness thing, but I feel like her denial about not wanting to be wrong about you as a person is probably where it mostly comes from. Some people just get rigid.

Cleo is in the police academy, she really believes in the system she's dedicating her life to. I don't blame her for disapproving of vigilante justice. Can't blame any of the other friends I have at the precinct for disapproving.
I don't hate the law, I'm actually an assistant district attorney and I work closely with the police regularly. The justice system isn't perfect though... And I've become... Intimately aware of bad things some people do in the city. When I received the mask from Retrospec it was obvious what I needed to do.

[There's a slow grin at that - Baren's less convinced. It's hardly obvious.]
I guess.
You can be friends with precinct people all you want - I think they're pretty useless. [Harsh words, but there's no real bite. It's his opinion and it doesn't mean anything, in the long run.] If you're actually doing something, no harm in that, right?
If this is what you feel like you're meant to do, do it. And make some friends with people who won't judge you for it, damn.

It's a little hard to pinpoint potential friends who wouldn't judge a guy for having a secret identity when it's a secret. I get the impression my Other Self had a limited number of friends.
[ He shrugs. He'll have to work on that. ]
Then again he was in an odd position when it came to relating to other people. In most people's eyes he was the broken blind man they pitied. While he could sit in his living room and easily hear and sense everything people up and down the street said and did without meaning to. In November I woke up with his super senses and now you could say I 'see' more than anyone else, including the bad things, many which the police would be too late to stop. As I told my niece, if I'm going to be the freak who knows too much about the people around him I want to at least be the freak who uses his ability to do something good.

Baren had said that once in one of his memories and even now, he can't help but nebulously believe it. He's not the type of person would who be able to stick his neck on the line for someone he didn't even know.... probably. Regardless, it didn't mean that he didn't feel something for the people who could.]
You can tell by the way people talk, I think. The ones who care to tell other people how to live their lives - they probably wouldn't get it.
[ . . . Baren's not one of those people, but he's also not super adept or keen to make friends.]
Being judged for something that's out of your control too—
That kind of thing's exceptionally stupid. Limitations placed by society and others are way too annoying to listen to.

[ To be lawful or to be good? ]
People judge without realizing that they're doing it and it doesn't always come out in insults or exclusion. Even some of the people I consider friends treat me like something fragile, almost child-like. I wouldn't expect people to take kindly to my new ability either if they realized how much it tells me. The last thing I need are people tip toeing around me because I'm not only blind I have sensitive ears too. Wearing the mask, nobody treats me that way. I'll take the vigilante controversy and people's suspicion over it any day.

It's all nuanced. Complicated. Complex. Much like how people treat Matt with good intentions but shity execution - ]
People have plenty of faults.
[And he doesn't sound judging, just accepting. It's how it is.]
Keep your secrets. It makes sense. No one will be hearing about your shit from me, anyway, seeing as it's not mine to give out. Just know that you reap what you sow.
[ - so if anyone finds out about Matt's identity, it's not Baren's fault. He'll continue to be neatly hands off about it. It's just.... how he is.]

Thank you for being reasonable and listening to my explanation. I won't cause you any more trouble.
