My name is Sakichi Niijima. This message is addressed to those of us still in Recollé.

Valentine's Day is approaching. Many of you had plans with members of the expeditionary teams that are no longer feasible, but all is not lost. I and Chiyo Matsuoka intend to deliver any parcels addressed to those expeditionary members, provided they are entrusted to us by February 14th. The Post Office is continuing its hold on all out-of-town mail, so do not send any of your gifts through traditional mailing methods.

Please reply if you have a letter or parcel you would like delivered, and we will arrange for a pick-up.

[ Shouldn't the power of love be enough? ]

The kind of training that will prepare you for long treks under a sizable load. Simulation will be ideal. There's no substitute for the real thing.

Okay! [ She nods. He makes a really good point. She doesn't want to fail on the important day. ] I'll try whatever training you think is best. What should I do?

We'll hike. Being surefooted in any terrain is...

[ He trails off when a new message appears on his screen. He glances over it quickly and-- ]

You know Baren Kaiyou?

Yes! We should be ready to travel across any type of land and to go anywhere! For the job!

[ She looks down at her notifications, too. ]

Hm? I've met him once, and he was really nice to me.

[ But she's seen how he responds on the network, so she now has a more well-rounded view of what he can be like. ]

Is he your friend?

No.

[ That comes without hesitation. ]

We were supposed to have known each other in our past lives. "Really nice" is not how I would have described him when we spoke.

[ Such savage honesty.

That bit of info definitely piques her interest, though, and she leans forward. ]

Really? You have memories of him already? How is he like with you?

[ She can guess a little from the thread she can see on the post, but... It'd be good to hear it in Sakichi's words. His unfiltered, sincere thoughts. ]

I don't have memories of him, but he has memories of me. He was looking for me months before I joined the Retrospec network.

[ He shakes his head slightly. ]

Even so, he seems hesitant to share any information with me. If I didn't know he was actively interested in my existence, I would think him flippant. I'm still not sure how to gauge him.

Oh... Hmm...

[ Chiyo sets her phone down. Responding to other people can wait for a while. ]

I wonder if he's a little afraid? I don't know him at all, but I know some people don't want to trigger memories too soon. It's... something that will probably happen eventually, but if your life here is happy, it'd be hard to want to disturb it. If you care and know what the memories hold, sometimes you don't want to force it even if you care deeply in those memories... it's hard to know the right thing to do, you know?

[ She remembers her conversation with Yato months ago about Yukine. It still colors how she thinks about memories now. A part of her thinks that Yukine should have the choice to know, but Yukine's choice isn't so much a choice, as it is an inevitably. Death is too much to bear, and she hopes what lays in wait for Sakichi is something much happier. She desperately wishes for it. ]

Are the memories something you want to know right away? Even if they're not the happiest thing? Or even if they are?

[ He's still as he listens. The thought that Baren could be trying to protect him is an admittedly unexplored one. Maybe Sakichi was unhappy in his other life; maybe he did unhappy things. Perhaps the issue is not as straightforward as he thought it was.

It would be easier if he could understood the shape of Baren's character. Then, at least, Sakichi could trust his judgment more comfortably. ]

I'd like to know what kind of man I might have been under different circumstances. Whether those circumstances were happy or sad makes little difference to me.

Either way, it isn't an urgent matter. I can wait.

[ Being able to glimpse another version of yourself is an extraordinary opportunity, but Sakichi isn't obsessed with it. There's enough to contend with in the present without chasing after some mysterious other life. ]

Have your memories been troubling?

If that's the case, tell him that. [ She laughs, trying to lighten the mood a little. It's something serious they're talking about, but it doesn't need to be dark. ] I know that you'll be you no matter what. Your strength is something I really admire.

[ His strength of character, she means. ]

My memories aren't that bad. Like, they can be a little confusing or silly or embarrassing, but a lot of them happen at a school or at someone's apartment or something. I've heard much worse from other people.

[ He blinks at the compliment. Rarely do people frame their descriptions of him in overtly positive ways. But it is Chiyo... ]

That's good. A peaceful life suits you. Is there anyone else here you've seen in that life?

Mm, but he's no longer on the app. Mikorin— Mikoto Mikoshiba. I didn't expect to see him in my memories... but even though I could tell they aren't exactly the same person, I can't say they aren't similar.

[ How does she want to put this? ]

I try to keep them separate in my head, though, because I want to think all my experiences are... valid? [ She nods. Yeah, valid is the word she wants. ]
