Ladies and gentlemen of the public court. The following is submitted into evidence for your viewing.
Zee Carlisle, also Zachariah Carlisle, was murdered in late August by persons unknown. The cause of death appears to be stabbing by a long sharp object on the roof of the Wiffle Waffle Waffle House. No other persons appear in the video. However, the series of events is recorded as follows:
1) Zee Carlisle is observed approaching the Wiffle Waffle House and checking the mailbox repeatedly for some time.
2) Zee begins to fall as if he has been struck, disappearing as he does so. Outside sources have confirmed that Zee was able to teleport short distances.
3) He next appears on the security tape on the roof of the building, impaled on an unknown object.
4) He teleports again, where his body is found obscuring the entrance of the Wiffle Waffle waffle house some time later. Witnesses confirm that it was as if he appeared out of nowhere.
5) The words "Jim, did you know" appear on the side of the waffle house written in blood.
Video of the death has been loaded onto a working laptop in the public library for your examination. Do not try to destroy the video or the laptop. There are many copies.
In Zee's office, the following evidence was discovered:
1) A list of former Retrospec users who appear to no longer be on the app. It is not certain when they left.
2) A list of non-Retrospec users who have died within the last few months. These people are all criminals. They have all died in strange and unexplained or self-inflicted ways.
3) The last six individuals Zee checked on before he left his office and died. These individuals are: James Barnes. Akira Turner. Eren Jaeger. Leo Valdez. Minato Arisato. Hitori Togusa.
4) Conversations between Zee and the following individuals concerning a task he needed to focus on or on the increasingly dangerous situation in Recolle: Eren Jaeger. Leo Valdez. Minato Arisato. Hitori Togusa.
5) Multiple photos of the mailbox.
We propose the following:
Zee Carlisle was investigating the mysterious deaths and believed them to be murders. Those who had left the app were no longer suspects as they did not retain their regained items or abilities. Zee believed that the murders were conducted by the use of an item returned to a Retrospec user. Zee was concerned that other items would be returned, either to the same Retrospec user, or to others, that would be misused.
When he went to the mailbox in person, the Retrospec user realized that Zee had grown too close to their identity. Zee was thus murdered using this item. We know that this person is able to use this item to commit murders while making it appear to be something else, even after medical examination. The deaths were ruled as heart attack, suicide, and choking. It is possibly something extremely powerful, such as a kind of illusion ability or mind control or even a magical spell that causes death. At least one of the victims called the police in advance to report that they were dying. However, we know the ability must be used as a physical item as it was returned through the mailbox.
The words in blood are a red herring or an unfinished message to the Retrospec app manager called Jim. We do not know what was being written at this time.
The identity of the murderer is likely to be one of those Zee had personally identified. James Barnes, Akira Turner, Eren Jaeger, Leo Valdez, Minato Arisato, and Hitori Togusa. Currently, James Barnes has been arrested and convicted of this murder. However, we are uncertain if he is the true culprit as his arrest was due to a misunderstanding.
All evidence and information has been passed to the legal authorities. If you have doubts, you may await their investigation.

Private: Togusa
[Gar hands over the manila envelope with a copy of the tapes and a copy of everything they found in Zee's office and especially on his phone, which he suspects that the police don't actually have the password to.]
...
...
...
You're a suspect, too, but you're the only policeman who's handling this. You need to like... do this right. Or James is gonna be in jail forever.
I'm gonna let everyone else know in a few days. After I figure out what to say.
...He didn't do it.
Re: Private: Togusa
"I know James didn't do it," quiet. He draws the envelope closer and opens it, brow furrowing tight. "I've lost my ability to look into this officially, the police think they have their killer. But I promised him I'd find the real person."
Togusa remains silent for a few moments as he reads, before he gets obviously surprised by something. "Why was he looking at my file?" His eyes raise to look at Gar again, as if he has an explanation.
no subject
Gar frowns.
"Like... did they even have any evidence, or."
Actually, he knows for a fact they didn't have evidence since he's got more evidence than they do. At Togusa's question, he gives a shrug.
"I dunno, man. I'm just reporting everything we found. I mean, I know almost all of you guys, kinda sorta, and no one really fits that well. ...But someone killed him."
no subject
Togusa looks over the six names again, and for a second it looks like he's staring off into space. He's really reviewing something on his cyberbrain, but it always looks weird when he does that.
"If you want to cut your suspects down to the six of us. Then, who stands out depends on how you look at it."
"Leo Valdez, Dante's buddy. He is-" pause to remember that word Eleanor used, "pyrokinetic, his powers have to do with fire. If he was going to kill Zee, that's now how he would do it."
"James certainly has motive, but not the capability, and not the means. After he attacked Zee, Retrospec took back all the weapons they had given him. And you and I both know he didn't do it anyway."
"Even without knowing the capabilities of two of these people, I can say that Minato is by far the most powerful person on that list. Capability-wise, he had some way to kill Zee remotely without being anywhere near him. If it was him, James is doomed, because he's off the app now. I think he might have fallen out of sync before Zee's death, but I'm not 100% on that. However. Character-wise, I don't believe Minato did it intentionally."
"Eren and Akira are relative unknowns, to me. I know Eren is military, and he is another person who has had a lot of contact with Zee. He and I have been speaking about what Zee could have possibly been up to before he died. Akira is a law student, our conversations have been pretty philosophical. I don't want to point fingers at them just because I don't know them as well."
"However. Both of them joined the app after we stopped having any contact with Jim. If this was some crime of passion to try to get Retrospec to react, to grab Jim's attention? Then it doesn't make sense that either of them did it."
A long pause, and Togusa closes the envelope again. He clasps his hands and looks at Gar seriously. Because it's time to stop dancing around a topic.
"Which brings us to me. You saw Zee had my file open, did you read what it said?"
no subject
The thing was, he wasn't going to trust any of these people just based off his own conjecture.
"Yeah. You have a cyberbrain."
Including Togusa.
"I don't really know what that means. But I also know everyone else who was murdered was a criminal."
And you're a cop.
"That's why... at least one other person knows where I am and has a copy of this. ...And why we're gonna release this to everyone. Sorry. I can't just trust you with it."
no subject
"But for full disclosure, I also have a set of riot gear that makes me nearly invisible. Especially to cameras. If you want me to turn that over to somebody else, I will. Nobody else can interface with it, though, because of the cyberbrain."
Togusa's jaw sets. "I had the ability to do this. And I've never hidden my long-term intention of putting the people of Retrospec in jail for their crimes. So if you think I got desperate for that outcome, I've got motive. But if getting James out of jail was as easy as throwing myself in it, I would have already done it."
"Also unfortunately, my alibi is that I was asleep." A dry laugh. "I spent days in those dreamscapes. First my own, then Mariko Aramaki's."
He hesitates. "Wait. I might actually be able to prove that. But what I'm saying is that you're right to keep me on your suspect list. I didn't do it. But I know this looks terrible."
