retrospec | [TEXT]

With everything seeming to have blown over from the last few months, I figure I should make my services known.

I'm Aramaki and I'm a Private Investigator that specializes in missing persons, fraud and identity theft. The RPD has used my services and I have been hired as an investigator for cases for several law offices here in Recolle. Like many of you I was ...indisposed, shall we say, from events in the last few months and have been similarly unsettled by other recent events. Since my usual casework has dried up due to the end of year lull, I'm offering my assistance to folks until things pick up again.

I know that there has been conversation; that some of us are remembering things differently than their friends and family who are also on the app. If anyone has a particular person or event that they are looking for records on, feel free to reach out.

Personally, I am also looking for information on events in the last two months.

If anyone has information relating to the mass haunting we experienced last month, I'm trying to get the tidbits shared from the ghosts into one file.

There is also the matter of the virus in October. I am decently sure I was in the first group of infected and I am trying to see if there are any commonalities between those in the originating group.

Let me tell you about Ethel. She was a wonderful lady. I probably could have grilled her about more information specifically about Retrospec, but it was far more interesting to ask her about her life.

She'd grown up in the 1930's, and she loved baseball, always wanted to play more than recreationally. We talked for hours, she told me about how baseball used to be played, I told her everything about Japanese baseball. It was great. She'd always dreamed about leaving Recolle, going somewhere bigger, because at the time, Recolle was a pretty small town. She just never got around to it. But it didn't feel like a true regret.

I got the sense, from how she talked about Recolle as she was growing up, everybody knew everybody. She made some off-handed comments about family rivalries, I guessed she meant the Founding Families, but she tried to keep her nose out of it, so I didn't get specific details. But, as she got older, the city felt like it was changing. She didn't like going out after dark, like the city itself got meaner sometimes.

Ethel only died pretty recently, she lived to be quite old. What she said about her death was that she had been walking in the Recolle Woods, for exercise. The last thing she saw was a bear. But not a normal bear. And Recolle doesn't have bears, anyway. She said it was huge and black, and had these green glowing eyes, standing on its hind legs. It didn't even touch her, but she just looked into its eyes, and boom.

To me, it sounded like the old stories of kami but of course it would.

She was just a really lovely lady. I helped lead her to the door where you could write your own stories. It felt like if she wanted to have a life outside of Recolle, or play baseball in a Japanese stadium, she'd be able to experience that if she went there. She thought it was grand.

i did talk to some ghosts last month but mostly this one guy
he was a ww2 vet, still dressed like a soldier and everything
recolle born and bred but he died only a few months after coming back from the war
mostly he was just really lonely and wanted to talk to someone about anything
like literally anything
he spent a lot of time telling me all about the different shops and places that have changed over the years in recolle

but he also mentioned some stuff about the founders
that cavendish and mahoney put vanderweele in jail instead of killing him because they needed him around to fix all his magic that was still deep in the retrospec stuff
that was decades ago and they're still working on it, they still don't have it all under control
but idk how the ghost knew all that
he didn't know anything about retrospec at all
after he told me all that he actually asked me who all those people were in the first place

[She simply stares at the name for a beat, typing and deleting responses a few times. 'Who the fuck is this?' becomes 'You know an awful lot for a corpse' becomes 'HOW'.

Finally, she settles on another approach.]

One of the ghosts with older clothing talked to me. It seems that about fifty or sixty years ago, there were refugees here from planets at risk of destruction but still existing. But the ghost haven't been any more able to leave than we are.

It might have something to do with however they've brought us here.

What worries me is the fact that we have whole lives here. Why enable that possibility if we're all from elsewhere.
