What's up, users! We've mostly fixed the technical problems we were having earlier (unless Danny missed something again) but you might want to wear green. Also, I'm supposed to make a vague and mysterious informational post here but that sounded boring so I made a video presentation instead!

Cheers!

Retrspec Incorporated

As of this post all apples, oranges, lemons, and limes have been replaced in-universe as the silly dancing fruits shown above. This means that as with Chocobos all NPCs will insist this is how things have always been and history/movies/etc will back them up.

In honor of St. Patrick's Day characters will find a request from Retrospec to upload a picture of themselves to the network in which they are wearing something green. They will find themselves shocked lightly by their device if they try to use it without complying. Rude?

A non-triggered memory regain can be earned through participation in this post in honor of Lucy's birthday the holiday with proof of a single thread with at least five comments from your character. If you plan to redeem this, please submit it to our regains page with the explanation of "March freebie". This must be submitted before April to be valid! Regardless of whether or not a character earns the freebie, all characters will find a gold coin with the Retrospec logo on one side and a Chocobo on the other. On the outside edge of the coin they will find "Jim, put a meaningful quote here. - Janet" engraved in a beautiful font. The Chocobo will morph into a horse should your character obtain the memory regain from the event; it will stay a Chocobo if your character does not obtain the memory regain.

Please see our OOC information post HERE for some information and reminders - you can direct any questions about this post there!

Please feel free to use this post as a network mingle. Every toplevel can be considered a new post, and threadjacking is permitted. No NPC response will be given. Usernames are the character's full real AU names, not aliases or chosen nicknames or usernames, and seemed to have filled themselves in; nothing characters do can change or obscure their names currently.

As a rich jerk hacker I resent that remark.
Also I resent this video since it's clearly done by an amateur.

Hitori Togusa Okay, then. Since I'm dealing with a professional, here. What makes a rich jerk hacker go rogue like this? You have the talent and ability to mess with people. But you can only do it on a small scale because of your lack of resources.
Hitori Togusa But then one day, someone bankrolls you. This isn't the inevitable end result?
vendettastool: (what did u say)

[personal profile] vendettastool 2017-03-18 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yoon-sung Lee Losing your riches will make you go rogue like this
Yoon-sung Lee I'm rich so I have no need to make a sudden and dramatic sign of how much of a jerk I am. It's easy enough to tell.
Yoon-sung Lee Either that, or you have a jerk hacker that just got rich and decided to try to share his rich jerkiness to other people
Yoon-sung Lee But he doesn't have the means to share with too many people, hence why he hasn't inflicted this monstrosity on anyone outside of a select few.

Hitori Togusa I see. But, the more infrastructure gets built up, the less of your own resources you need to inflict your will on the world through it.
Hitori Togusa There's an obvious follow-up question that probably shouldn't get asked over this network.
Hitori Togusa So let me ask instead if you have any new ideas on how they can determine the user with no login? We ruled out fingerprinting.
vendettastool: (i r smart)

Yoon-sung Lee tHAT'S RIGHT. tHE MORE INFRASTRUCTURE, THE BETTER THE CONTROL.
Yoon-sung Lee bUT THAT'S SOMETHING THAT I'VE SEEN HAPPEN IN GAMING DESIGN, NOT REAL WORLD.
Yoon-sung Lee bIO-STRUCTURE. eVERY LIVING CREATURE HAS A SIGNAL OR SET PARAMETERS THAT IS IN NO WAY THE SAME AS ANOTHER. eVEN TWINS WILL HAVE A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT SIGNATURE DUE TO HOW THEIR BODIES REACT.

Yoon-sung Lee sORRY MY CAPSLOCK IS STUCK. gLITCH NEED TO RESET.

Hitori Togusa You're the first other person I've met that has heard of this theory.
Hitori Togusa The idea of the ghost, that piece of individuality that sticks with you no matter what. It's more than just the sense of self or even user identity. If you could read it, data-wise, that would give you a full proof way to identify everyone.
vendettastool: (don't get me wrong)

[personal profile] vendettastool 2017-03-21 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yoon-sung Lee It's common sense though.
Yoon-sung Lee We've heard about DNA for years now, and that is just a more specific way to look at a person's bio-structure that's limited to one or two tiny traces in the genes.
Yoon-sung Lee I'm just expanding on it.

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-03-21 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Hitori Togusa I think you're on to something, so stick with this. But does it have to specifically be DNA-related?
Hitori Togusa DNA fingerprinting takes time, and usually you're matching a case to a known sample. Unless you've already got somebody's DNA, you can't tell whose DNA you're looking at with something found on them.
Hitori Togusa But I like the idea that they're identifying users by something physical instead of entirely mental. How are they doing it so fast?
vendettastool: (huh)

[personal profile] vendettastool 2017-03-21 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yoon-sung Lee Who says it's limited to DNA?
Yoon-sung Lee There's all different kind of technology out there so maybe someone cracked a way to use it to track people.
Yoon-sung Lee Like maybe it has to be tied in with the electricity that people naturally generate.
Yoon-sung Lee Or scent.
Yoon-sung Lee I wouldn't know though since I'm just a programmer and not a biologist.

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-03-27 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Hitori Togusa You're right, there's too many possibilities to narrow it down without more information.
Hitori Togusa What do you make of the user base reporting strange memories, though? I keep going back to the idea it has to be mental because of that. Even though I haven't seen anything, myself.
Hitori Togusa Which means I'm probably limiting my own perspective and missing something.
vendettastool: (i dont think)

[personal profile] vendettastool 2017-03-31 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yoon-sung Lee I'd hate to say that we might need to wait on this, but we might need to do so.
Yoon-sung Lee I think that we need advice or at least some extra help from someone that knows that kind of stuff.
Yoon-sung Lee I can work with computers and probably some maths but actual science and biology isn't my strongest points.
Yoon-sung Lee As for the strange memories.
Yoon-sung Lee It sounds like whatever is causing them varies from person to person. Which means it's customized for each person involved with this, just like how they figure out who is using it where.
standalonehuman: (TogusaPonder2)

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-03-31 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Hitori Togusa Okay. That last point, especially, I'll agree with. This isn't a 'blind men describing the elephant' thing where we're all getting snapshots of the same information.
Hitori Togusa It's all very different from person to person.
Hitori Togusa But you're right to wait, also. If neither of us has the expertise to tackle the psychological questions, then maybe we should find someone who does.
Hitori Togusa Everybody on this app has a vested interest in solving this thing.
vendettastool: (there's a moment)

[personal profile] vendettastool 2017-04-04 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yoon-sung Lee We'll need people who are medical experts and people who are good at the mental thing.
Yoon-sung Lee I've tried some hacking, but I have to admit that I didn't go after the source; I was too busy to try to block my servers from catching whatever this is.
Yoon-sung Lee Or at least make sure that there was no signs of someone trying to mine information on my side.
Yoon-sung Lee But, if you really want to discuss this in person or connect others with me, go for it.
Yoon-sung Lee I have the time, strangely enough.

[Oh REALLY? Well, he asked for it.]

Hitori Togusa I'd start with Tim Drake, if you two haven't connected yet. He's got a lot of ideas on what to do about the programming of the app, but has far fewer resources.
Hitori Togusa He's figured out that the app is able to network without using the internet, but is still trying to learn how.
Hitori Togusa For medical personnel, Dr. Lucian Trevelyan has a clinic in town, I've been politely suggesting that everyone who has been experiencing physical changes go see him, not only because he's a great doctor, but so that he has a continuous data set of what changes have been occurring.
Hitori Togusa Not a peep on the psychological front, though. Retrospec's sampling seems to have missed anyone who might be an expert.

[He ALWAYS asks for it, the brat]

Yoon-sung Lee I haven't met him before. Granted I've been preoccupied.
Yoon-sung Lee Yeah, I've gotten that far too.
Yoon-sung Lee I haven't had any strange medical problems but I think I'll keep her in mind just in case.
Yoon-sung Lee I get the feeling that it's the mental issues that we will need the most help for considering the age of a lot of people on here.
standalonehuman: (TogusaFrown)

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-04-07 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Hitori Togusa I know. I try not to keep thinking about it, because that's one of the things that keeps making me angry.
Hitori Togusa Whatever Retrospec is up to, they've drawn a lot of kids into it.
Hitori Togusa I can already hear the 'nuh-unh, I'm totally 18!' objections now, but kids. From their perpective, it makes sense because they're more likely to use a social media app and less likely to question it.
Hitori Togusa I don't like it anyway.
vendettastool: (i dont think)

[personal profile] vendettastool 2017-04-08 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yoon-sung Lee Maybe it's not just the kids that we need to worry about.
Yoon-sung Lee They can be a tough group considering the amount of crap that they go through inbetween hormones and the school system.
Yoon-sung Lee But I know what you mean.
standalonehuman: (TogusaThoughtful)

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-04-08 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Hitori Togusa Of course. Don't get me wrong, I'm also keeping an eye on some of my colleagues.
Hitori Togusa The only way we're going to be okay is if we keep talking to each other.
Hitori Togusa But it has been interesting to watch. Every time someone has seen something that might be too much for them, watching the swell of support that comes from the people on the app. Everybody coming together to help each other out, rather than point judging fingers when those videos were going around.
vendettastool: (and so..?)

[personal profile] vendettastool 2017-04-09 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yoon-sung Lee That's good to hear.
Yoon-sung Lee People can be surprising, but I think the way this app has made us so separate from the rest of the city gives us more reasons to try to help each other out.
