To the users of Retrospec:

This message comes from both Grell Sutcliffe and Lucian Trevelyan. There’s been discussion recently of certain changes coming over our userbase. Changes that come in different forms, from certain unexplained moments that feel like dreams or perhaps memories, items showing up without cause, or certain physical attributes undergoing shifts in inexplicable ways. It’s to the latter that we address ourselves.

We are both medical professionals, and as such we’d like to say that if you undergo such changes and would like someone to take a look at what’s happened to you, for any reason, we’re capable of doing so and willing to provide you with what information and care you need. Anyone that comes to see us will be treated with the same standards as we’d give any patient - your information will remain confidential, and your visits will be at your discretion.

If you’d like to make an appointment for your visit, contact Dr. Trevelyan, and standard clinic hours will apply. Weekend morning appointments can also be arranged. If you require care outside of office hours or need things to be looked at immediately, contact Dr. Sutcliffe.

[ The clinic is a relatively small establishment, and its schedule is kept intentionally clear as to not overwork the only doctor in residence. When Dante comes in, he will be greeted by the receptionist who asks to double-check his name. Once that's done, he would be allowed to go into the consultation room.

The room is painted in a faded cream colour, and decorated a little to make it look less intimidating. Lucian is at the desk, his attention turning to Dante from his computer. ]

Hello, Dante. I have the prescription pre-typed for you, and a place that you can purchase it at if you do not already have a location. Before this, however, I would need you to give me some of your identification details, so I can keep a record.

[ It's all about logging and tracing in case something goes wrong with what's prescribed, or something else. Mostly administrative. ]

[It's been a roller-coaster of a week for Dante, between balancing all the new revelations about his past self's life and the consequences of his actions from before that. The pointed ribbing from the people he hangs out with about his new eyes has only added to everything else, between the constant jokes about what drugs he might've taken to get his eyes to change like that and the desire to just forget about them entirely.

But in spite of all that, Dante strides into the consultation room with his usual confident bearing, extending his hand toward Lucian when he sees him to shake.]

Thanks for doing this. What sort of things do you need to know? Just the basics or about this Retrospec stuff, too?

[He's more than willing to give the details to his medical record--pretty basic--but when it comes to talking about the stuff that's gone on since they first were connected to the network, Dante's not quite as free with the details.]

I need your name and your identification number. As a rule, clinics need to keep track of what they give out and to who, in compliance with practice.

[ Not that he had any reason to suspect Dante, but protocol is protocol. ]

If you would like to discuss anything related to what has happened to you, I can advise you based on my knowledge, if you are comfortable.

[ Only the ID is necessary, the rest is up to if he's okay with it. ]

[The look that crosses over Dante's face might tell the good doctor that he's not exactly eager to talk about the other memories he's had. He's just not used to this whole idea of people offering to do something in exchange for nothing. Even the people he's known that proclaim to be humanitarians were always sure to get their publicity for their good deeds...]

Sure. Name's Dante Rantanen. [And here he'll rattle off the spelling, followed up by his ID number. Once he's done, he'll pause a moment, then pose another question.]

I know you can't talk about the specifics because of patient privacy, but have you had a lot of people coming to you because of changes like these?

[ Lucian puts patients first, and those who come to see him regularly will know that. It's all up to Dante's preference. ]

A few. No more than half a dozen, but there are some. I cannot explain the changes using a scientific method as of yet. Instead, I focus more on addressing any discomfort or pathologies that might come with them.

[ Most of them are, thankfully, alright. ]

Pathologies? [The idea hadn't even occurred to him.] Are you saying that someone might remember some disease they had and get it again?

[THAT WOULD BE TERRIBLE????]

[ That's a possibility but not one that has happened so far, thankfully: ]

No, not exactly. I apologize, it is medical language - any sort of physical change that may arise that is not merely cosmetic. For example, eye colour changes could be accompanied by something happening to their sight.

[ None so far, but just in case. ]

It is difficult to investigate these changes without procedures, so my approach is to make the person's life as close to normal as possible.

[That's a lot less worrying.]

Gotcha. Has that happened to anyone so far? I still see just as well as I did before.

[He pauses, frowning in consideration, and then... well, this is a doctor that's investigating things happening on the network. He might as well offer the information up, right?]

What about stuff that's not so easy to pin down? Physical changes that aren't so easily measured? Has anyone talked to you about something like that yet?

[He's not entirely certain how to broach the topic, but it is something he's been wondering about...]

Not yet, but I am here for in case it does happen.

[ Lucian has been on the receiving end of some strange visions, so he can sort of guess at what Dante is getting at. ]

There have been people addressing the phenomena of Retrospec users receiving visions. That is unfortunately a matter that I have not been able to explain using pure neuroscience.

[ That, and it's not his specialty. ]

[He shakes his head. He is curious about the memories and what's changed to start triggering them in people, but that's not quite what he's getting at here.]

I'm not talking about the visions. What I mean is...

[Well. In for a penny, in for a pound, right?]

A couple weeks ago, I remembered how to wield a sword. I'd never held one before in my life, but when I tried sparring against someone else, it was like my body remembered years of training. I was wondering if you've had anybody bring anything like that to you.

[ Dante is actually not the first person to come to him with strange neural complications. ]

Not an exact copy of your experience, but something similar. [ Kashuu has his voodoo sword. ] Does it hurt you to remember or use your sparring ability?

Not so far. [He flexes his hand, as though wrapping his fingers around the hilt of his sword.] At least, not outside of what you'd expect. It's just this weird muscle memory, almost like my body's moving on its own.

[ There's a moment of pause as Lucian frowns a little more in thought. ]

Then it would fall into the same category as regaining vision memories. You are not alone in this, Dante. It is unusual, but not harmful as far as I know. Though as for the why, I am looking into that right now.

Hey, I didn't come here looking for reassurance. I'm doing fine with all these memories. I just wanted to make sure you knew everything that's been going on so far.

[The defensiveness isn't intentional, but it slips out regardless. Excuse him, Lucian, he's only just started making his peace with a pretty bad memory he regained last weekend. There's a part of himself that's felt vulnerable and fragile ever since, and in a way it feels a little bit like the doctor's seen through him to that vulnerability.

So Dante responds in the only way he really knows how--by getting prickly.]

I already know I'm not the only one getting these sorts of changes. The network's been flooded with people talking about their eyes or hair changing, remember?

[ There's a few moments of pause as Lucian considers what to say, his neutral expression carefully regulated to look thoughtful. Children can be like this, so it doesn't offend him as much. ]

If you have any more questions, I can try to answer them.

[It's really the "you are not alone in this" that gets him--it feels like everybody's trying to get him to open up and let other people in, something he's spent the past nineteen years learning not to do.

But Dante shifts his shoulders, trying to let go of the frustration. Any other questions...?

After a moment he shakes his head.]

I don't think so. But I'll let you know if anything else happens.

[ Doctors cannot assist patients with anything that is not told to them. ]

[ Now that the consultation is over, Dante can leave. This wasn't formal, so there was no need for any fees. Lucian generally only charged for items consumed and a small nominal fee to keep his clinic running. ]

[He's not being sarcastic--he knew his mom had to go to the eye-doctor to get prescriptions for her own contacts, so he hadn't been positive what he needed to do to get a legitimate pair.]
