I did check Wikipedia before I sent that message. Just to make sure.

I can kind of sympathize. Obviously, first-generation immigrant and most people can find Japan on a map, it's different, but if I start talking about why I'm embarrassed to speak Japanese in front of other Japanese-speakers because I only really know Tsugaru dialect, people don't get it.

I don't know how many Finnish dialects there are either, but basically... are there any parts of Finland that get looked down on? For being 'hicks', especially?

(The top part of Europe that looks like a dick split in half, Finland is the balls right?)

[...not entirely wrong.]

As long as I remember it, that's better than not knowing where it is! Even if I have to remember it that way.

[It doesn't come up that often, so that shouldn't be too hard.]

Got it.

Anyway, Tsugaru dialect is basically like that for Japanese - people from that part of the country have the 'stupid hick' reputation. Normally I'd just use standard Tokyo dialect, but Tsugaru dialect is the one I was taught by my parents, so I know it better, and there are a lot of words that are way different in Tsugaru dialect that I just don't know in regular Japanese.

It's subtitled on Japanese television for other Japanese speakers who wouldn't understand it otherwise. It's pretty hard for me to hide it.

It's not a really big deal. Most of the time I'm speaking English if I'm not talking to my family anyway.

I'm a first-generation immigrant. I think of English as my native language.

It's okay! Japan's still a part of my heritage, I've just never been there myself.
