A few brief notes: 1) Good luck and best wishes to all the students gearing up to start school this week. While I know the end of summer vacation and the onset of the school year may seem like an event to anticipate with a sense of mounting dread instead of enthusiasm, remember that — in the words of South African activist and former president Nelson Mandela — "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." Increasing access to education is one of the main pursuits of the Sandiego Foundation, and we share American statesman Benjamin Franklin's opinion that "an investment in knowledge pays the best interest." We pride ourselves on the number of scholarships we're able to offer to students of all ages and educational goals, as well as grants and other financial support. If you're getting ready for school and finding that you'd welcome some additional financial assistance in the coming semester, please don't hesitate to make contact; we still have plenty of scholarships as yet unawarded, and will continue to accept applications for them through the end of this week. It's your job to chase your dreams. We at the Sandiego Foundation want nothing more than to help you get there. 2) Speaking of the Foundation, we're still in the process of getting our fall calendar of events fleshed out, and I'm always open to new ideas for community functions that people might like to see and take part in. One can only attend so many dinners, socials, and golf outings before things start getting tedious. So, a poll for the masses: what sort of event would you most like to see come to Recollé? (At the risk of invoking a verbal cliché, I really would like to put the "fun" back into "fundraiser" on a much more regular basis.) 3) The usual daily mail contained a number of packages that I was expecting to see delivered, and a few unexpected ones marked with what seems to be the Retrospec logo. Experienced recipients, is there anything I should be particularly concerned about before I open these? 4) On a more personal note, I'm interested in hiring the services of a sketch artist, for a certain project I'm hoping to further. Oh, I LIKE that twist on the usual norm. So, a sign-up roster for willing participants, plus a cover fee for the audience to attend and participate, and then a flat rate to compel a singer of your choice to perform a song...

Let's see. Every singer should get one free veto, for the sake of comfort, but then maybe instead of getting out of it, they can pay instead to transfer the song to one of their cohorts.

A variety, based on the applicant's need. Some are flat-award scholarships — a single award of five hundred dollars, for example, to help with books or cover the cost of a class. Some are continuing, with merit-based requirements — for example, ones that will cover any class taken as a part of the student's major curriculum, provided they maintain a B average or better in those classes.

We try to provide opportunities that best fit the circumstances of the people we help.

My name is Minako Arisato, I'm one of the recreational event coordinators with ReVA.

We've done a lot of events in the past, and some of the fan favorites off the top of my head are: the film festival, dodgeball tournament, video game livestream marathon, penny drive, auctions, and pub crawls for the adults.

I'm sure you could make some of these into charity events for your Foundation, but if none of these sound appealing, I can run to the office and grab our entire list for you.

That's because math in and of itself is a foundation — a tool that you need to learn how to use, before you can apply it to things that do make sense. For example, you don't find math nearly so boring when it's a part of music, do you? Quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes — that's all fractions of a whole beat. Octaves are math in base eight. And when you're tuning your instrument or your voice to a particular pitch? That's math, too, because pitches are measured as frequencies in Hertz.

History without context is the same way; if all your teachers are having you do is memorize names and dates, then certainly it's hard to appreciate. But history is the story of humanity, the greatest and most complex story ever told. And that's a foundation, too, because all of the contributions and influences and activities of everyone who came before you are what brought you to right now, the present moment — and now it's your turn to influence that story in your turn.

As far as English is concerned, you have to master the rules before you can break the rules. Besides, great lyricists need a strong background in English and language, in order to make the structure of their lyrics fit with the rhythms and melodies of the songs they're intended for.

Biology is just a different means of understanding the world around you. If history is the story of humanity, then biology and the other sciences are detective novels — in which the great mystery is the working of the world around us, and the scientists are the sleuths trying to make sense of it based on the clues they can observe and glean from their experiences. And there's plenty of music in biology, too — many animals communicate through sound and pitch, even though they don't have an explicit language the way that humans do.

And as for economics, well. A good musician knows how to play to a crowd, doesn't he? That's all economics is, really — understanding the nature of the crowd, and the different ways you have of playing to them in order to succeed.
