Pay attention Recolle! As the weather gets colder, it's time to build some winter cat shelters! If you're interested, show up at the Central Recolle Animal Shelter next Saturday @ 10:00. We will provide you with materials, instructions, locations, coffee, and pizza at the end. Show the hell up! It's good work so that more cats survive the winter safely.

The basics of the shelters are the same, you'd just cut bigger openings for dogs.
It's important not to do that for all of them, though. One threat to stray cats is stray dogs.

dogs don't inherently hate cats? but... it makes sense to keep them apart

I don't think either species has a biological use for 'hate'.

Some breeds of dogs are biologically wired to chase small furry things, regardless of whether or not those things are cats. Hence the shelters. Are you coming, or not?

It's pretty easy, you can build them out of beer coolers and foam. We'll provide any supplies and instructions.

Not a ghost, but a lot of people think it's a nice idea to volunteer, and then the day of decide they're too tired or its too cold.

That does sound rough. Okay, definitely coming, even if the weather's terrible. Promise. ...Where exactly do I go?

I'll be in the parking lot at the animal shelter with coffee and instructions. I'm easy to spot, I'm the one with the ears and tail.

The lady who said there was a cat! Person. Person-cat.

I think there's more than one of us, if I recall correctly. But I don't personally know the others.

Whoa. And people just don't notice after a while?

Yeah, people not on the app just lose interest pretty quickly.

That actually sounds kind of depressing, no offence.

I presume we don't need to have any prior construction experience in order to assist?

That's right. They're pretty simple, and we have the materials and instructions.

Then I'll be sure to come and assist. Those cats deserve to have a warm place to sleep for the winter.

It's less my civic conscience and more a love for adorable kittens.

Well, half the point of the shelters is to get the cats to show up there regularly so they can be caught and neutered. So hopefully there won't be any kittens at all.

I'd imagine you'd still need to spay and neuter the existing kittens, though.

Eventually yes, it keeps the population as under control as it can be, and helps prevent incidences of feline cancers.

Ah, I wasn't aware of that last benefit. But overall, it does make good sense.

Reproductive hormones wreak havoc on female specimens. We have pamphlets on it at the shelter if you want to read about it.

Very interesting; I presume it must work differently than it does in humans, then. Perhaps I will have to pick up a copy when I am next there.

Oh good. There's actually some similarities in the effects birth control on humans, various forms have positive preventative statistics against cancer. In short, if the reproductive system isn't actively being used for reproduction the hormone floods can be damaging and it's in the body's best interest to mitigate it.

[saburai]

Hormonal birth control is a far cry from castration, however. You still have the reproductive hormones necessary to prevent the negative health consequences of removing them.

[ she's no medical expert, but she's never heard of anyone recommending artificial menopause for health benefit reasons... at least, not for a typical woman, anyway. ]

It is, although human reluctance for voluntary removal has more to do with social standards than medical ones. That's a whole different topic, my only real point was that hormonal birth controls can also help prevent some forms of cancer in humans.

[ She's now a little skeptical that that castration is actually associated with reduced cancer risk, given the fact that the other seems unaware of the health risks associated with menopause itself... but she'll keep the remainder of her misgivings to herself for now. ]

Well then, we can agree on the hormonal aspect being of benefit, at least.
