So we're doing this unit on advertising in English class, right? And we watched all these super-old commercials and talked about them and stuff. The point is, now I kinda have this stuck in my head.

Questions:
-How do I get it out of my head?
-How'd they make the kids get lifted by the invisible guy when CGI wasn't invented in the sixties? Wires? Blue screen, except for black-and-white somehow? Retrospec? I don't get it.
-Are oats even a good source of protein? I thought that was, like, meat and peanuts and stuff, and grains were for carbohydrates or something.

Sorry to ask, but this is really bothering me. At least it's not like those creepy burger ads with the plastic-face king.

Well! I don't know if it's going to be stuck in my head, but I do believe you've guaranteed that I'll be mispronouncing "protein" for the next several days. Congratulations.
drydrown: congratulations! (BOW ♡ it's fucking nothing!)

The true tragedy of that pronunciation is that it doesn't even help it scan all that much. And they pronounce it the same way while speaking... Perhaps it's a regional thing, but still, you'd think this had to get by several people...

And honestly, the less I try to think about the bizarre foray into fictional reality that is Retrospec, apparently, the better.

I suppose it's a little unavoidable as a topic, isn't it? Retrospec, that is, not the Scottish stereotypes.

-Replacing it with an even more annoying song usually works for me.
-I don't think Retrospec is that old, so not that? Probably?
-Maybe this is from when you could lie about food?
thesettingsun: smile (I guess I get it now alright)

I don't remember exactly, but recent. Probably not as old as this commercial.

Companies get founded all the time, though. Maybe it's one of the startup companies that didn't go bust when everyone was doing that?

usually they used wires
also they hand colored out any extra stuff
and then did the scene about five times
sliced the film together to make the blending
from invisible to visible
all the little tricks that is helped by the way the eyes work
they still use that trick in theater

- Find something more annoying, and if you need help, I know a few worse thing.
- Just because the CGI we know wasn't invented yet didn't mean they didn't have ways. Photo and video manipulation has existed since it's been invented as a media. You can find entire documentaries about that stuff on the internet.
- Back then they probably didn't know it wasn't a good source of protein. I mean, this video is ancient.

[Mr. Nelson, high school English teacher checking in. He might even be Kara's English teacher.]

Think of a really catchy song that you like and play it on repeat a few times. That's what works for me.

Wires have been used in showbiz long before television in stage productions. The green screen however came after the time this was filmed.

I don't know about the oats. That's a good question. I'd have to look it up.

Exactly the kind of impressive effect that potential consumers would remember, making it easier to remember to pick up a box of that cereal. Catch my drift?
devilsadvocato: (Default)

[personal profile] devilsadvocato 2017-11-14 09:15 am (UTC)(link)
Not necessarily. It would surprise a lot of people finding out superpowers are real. So maybe on a case by case basis.

When I say people find that special effect impressive I mean that is one of the keys to an effective advertisement. Something about it is memorable. The song is too. I mean it was just stuck in your head right? Jingles are written to become ear worms so people remember them later.
