Welcome to Retrospec™, the last social media network you will ever need. You are one of the few selected to test this exciting new platform based on our cutting-edge algorithms. Less than two hundred invitations have gone out, and membership is not currently open to the public. However, we hope you will come to see how useful Retrospec™ is, given time. We have for your use a variety of features such as text, voice, video, and image posts. We encourage you to explore our many options.

Please feel free to use this post as a network mingle. Every toplevel can be considered a new post, and threadjacking is permitted. No NPC response will be given. As a reminder, everything besides uploading a profile picture and information was locked until this post. Usernames are the character's full real AU names, not aliases or chosen nicknames or usernames, and seemed to have filled themselves in; nothing characters do can change or obscure their names currently. Oddly, profile pictures still cannot be swapped out at this time, so hopefully you took a good one.

This post is an overflow from the original post here. Feel free to either carry over threads from there or create entirely new ones.

FOR TOGUSA

((cont. from here))

And dare I ask why you would say that? Then I can decide whether or not to take it as a compliment.

[Even if he is (somewhat ironically) inclined to agree.]

All right, let's take it back to the first day of class. That 'define your terms' question that every student dreads on the first day of a lecture.

What is the law?

Oh, are we playing at role reversal now? Let me get in character.

the law is, um- (why did he call on me? does he hate me already? I’m starting to regret my life choices) -it’s a set of rules to enforce a certain kind of behavior. am i right, professor togusa?? that's what you were asking, right?

Hilarious.

[Trying to hide the fact that he is actually laughing a lot in real life.]

But all right. You've got three levels of people who interact with the law. In theory, you've got the politicians who write the laws but don't personally have a hand in how they are carried out. You've got the law enforcement professionals who enforce the laws, but don't get a choice in what laws they enforce. Then there's those people in the middle.

Governor Izunia can write a law, and how well it gets carried out is limited by the abilities of Officer Togusa. But no matter how many people Officer Togusa arrests, it's usually actually Lawyer Izunia who gets the final say in what happens to the criminal.

For better or worse.

[Ardyn's not quite done playing the part of student just yet, however.]

so what are you saying, professor?? That Lawyer Izunia has more sway than the Governor or the Officer? that doesn't seem very balanced
standalonehuman: (TogusaTalk2)

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-02-04 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe not more sway. Governor definitely has more power, but has to keep up to date on everything. Even things you might not be as well-versed in, you need to have an opinion on. More power means more restrictions. The Lawyer gets more freedom, and an option on what level you choose to engage with the law. You get to play to your strengths.

Indeed so.

[Looks like it's back to Ardyn being Ardyn again.]

And yet we've looped back around to my original question. That being why you think I wouldn't be a good politician, Togusa.

It's that desire for freedom. You don't suffer fools, and that's half the job of a politician.

You've also got a lot more trust over your own morality. You can trust in your interpretation of the law to make the judgement calls you need to. Some of that comes from your experience, but I'm betting some of it is the confidence to make a call that's not just based on precedent.

You're partly right at least. Several years ago, I would have said nearly completely correct.

But now, Togusa, I teach. Interpretation only stretches as far as the how's and why's of the cases my students have to recite back to me every morning. It's up to me to make sure that they learn how to parse what I tell them.

So, for the obvious follow-up question, why did you switch to teaching? You're very good at it. But do you get the same kind of fulfillment out of it that you did during active practice?
