Hello, everyone! As you've probably noticed, we've been having a few problems - I mentioned earlier that something got knocked out of balance, and we had to recalibrate, but in a few days we should be able to drop the emergency measures. Please be aware that there is an incoming storm, class four. General orders for that kind of thing are to report to management for any known threats and follow instructions, but so far what's known is "that might be a little annoying" and "hope it isn't". Theoretically it'll probably be related to the holiday, I think, because a large group of souls focused through the needle of a pin on one thing can sort of shape a thing around them.

That's sort of a really inaccurate way to put it on the technical side of things, but I think it's the easiest way to understand it! At any rate, we'll know more once we're in the thick of things. Please take care as usual; resources aren't exactly what some of you seem to think they are, and we had to expend rather more than usual in the past month or so to keep things with a few of you steady.

Per the mod plotting post, you may use this post to obtain one of this month's freebies! This month's freebie can be earned by turning in a thread on this post that has 5 or more consecutive comments from you with someone new. We define someone new as someone new to the game, or simply someone your character has never tagged before.

Please feel free to use this post as a network mingle. Every toplevel can be considered a new post, and threadjacking is permitted. No NPC response will be given. Usernames are the character's full real AU names, not aliases or chosen nicknames or usernames, and seemed to have filled themselves in; nothing characters do can change or obscure their names currently.

This post is the overflow for the post originally found here! Please feel free to make new toplevels or simply shift your threads over.

I'm Jamie Doh!
I'm a junior, premed, majoring in sociology.

Wow, premed is impressive on its own, but you're definitely in the right city for sociology. Recolle has everything you could ask for.

I'm an English/lit major with a minor in deaf studies, but I think I'm going to change my minor soon. I also do tutoring at the academic success center on campus.

This would be an amazing city to do graduate-level research in, what with at least one very substantial group of people under an internally consistent, long-term mass hallucination...
Although any paper you submitted about it would probably be rejected for not making any sense, since the academic journal editorship is probably mostly under the same delusion(s). So I guess you'd have to be able to love the research for its own sake.

What part of Japan are you from?

No kidding. I was talking more about it being an ethnic enclave and having so many multicultural events and people, but I can imagine that trying to study Retrospec and everything we've gotten into would be a hassle.

I was born and raised in Tokyo, so I'm used to the city.

Oh
That too obviously
lol
Yeah I bet there's a thesis or two just in how easy it is to get ingredients for Japanese dishes at the regular grocery store. I think where I grew up on the West Coast has a higher than average Japanese American population than the rest of the country, but even that's nothing like here. I mean, we actually have a shrine.

I wouldn't be surprised. It's really unique in that way, but I can't say I don't enjoy essentially having a part of home here with me while still feeling like I'm in America.

There are some students I tutor in Japanese instead of English, since they're from Japan like me. It's funny how that kind of thing isn't uncommon here.

Did you come to Recolle just for school, or did you move here a while back?

Just for school. So I've been here for about two and a half years now.

What about you?
--I mean, how long are you planning to stay?
Though I suppose you'll have no choice but to stay until whenever it is we reestablish contact with the outside world...

I'm the exact same as you, which would make sense, since we're in the same grade. I know I'll at least stay until graduation, so another year and a half, but I'm not sure if I'll go back after that or get my master's here.

But you have a point... Without me home, it's just my mom on her own, so I'm sure she's worried sick not being able to contact me. I'm sure we're all feeling uneasy about this lack of connection.

Oh.
Well, I actually heard from somebody that... judging by the way things have worked in the past, the people outside the city probably aren't worried about us.

That is, the same way most people in this city don't notice anything strange about things like giant domes blocking out the light, or horses not existing for a while... people we aren't able to get in touch with for Retrospec-related reasons don't notice anything strange about not being in touch with us.

I mean, I can't say for sure. But I guess I hope it's true.

Wait, really? Even if you aren't 100% sure, that takes a huge weight off of my shoulders!

I know about everyone in the city, of course, and I knew people outside of it still don't know what Retrospec is. Now that you mention it, I probably should have considered it a long time ago. But if this is true, it's the best news I've gotten all month.

[Of course, it would be far better if he could actually contact his mom, but at least she probably doesn't think her only child is dead.]

I'm so glad I could ease your mind! Now, if we could just reestablish contact and make the whole thing moot, that would really be something.

Thanks. Really, I mean it.

I'll try to hold out hope that things will be fixed soon, but with Retrospec the way it is, there's no telling when it'll come back.

[personal profile] floret 2018-02-08 10:08 am (UTC)(link)
I'll be trying to hold out hope, too. Maybe it'll be easier with both of us.
