I have a friend who teaches martial arts at a local dojo. You can find him on the app, Tatsuo Kihara. It's the same dojo where app users have been gathering during the weekends to practice and learn fighting skills. If you want to learn quickly you might wish to go several times a week. I would talk to Tatsuo and tell him your situation, he might be able to get you a discount on regular lessons.

Will it be all right if I don't have any prior experience with any sort of martial arts or self-defence? I'm also not super active so should I do anything before I start with him?

Sure. I'll tell him your situation.

They teach people of all experience levels and you'll be worked hard. Students are lead through warm up exercises and stretches to prevent injuries and lessons themselves are exercise in their own right. If you aren't active you will be after you begin.

That sounds kind of terrifying on its own but I think that's probably what I need. I tried jogging once before but I didn't really last that long. I kind of need someone or something to push me to be active or else I'll never be able to do it.

It sounds like this is a good option for exercise for you then. You can get in shape and learn self defense simultaneously. Personally I would recommend martial arts training to anyone looking for an exercise class but then again I might be a bit biased in favor of my friend.

That's what I'm thinking as well, getting in shape while also learning how to protect myself. Two birds with one stone and all that.

Is there a certain type of martial arts that's more geared towards beginners? Or are they all the same?

They're all the same. Different styles were developed by different people around the world and like any school they all start somewhere for beginners. Like with most things finding a good teacher is what really makes a difference.

And I'm guessing that Tatsuo Kihara is one of those good teachers?

I'm just a little biased but he was patient and kind enough to agree to teach me some techniques years back. He wasn't easy on me because I was his friend. He made sure I learned properly.

That does sound like a good teacher. I honestly need someone like that. I think if I was given any sort of leniency, I'd get a bit lazy about it.

What sort of techniques did he teach you?

Mostly throws, locks, and disarming techniques. Judo and jujitsu techniques. His specialty is based more in karate though.

It was important to me that I learn something and Tatsuo was open minded enough to teach me. I'm blind; some people hesitate to teach those with conditions like mine. But I'd say it's even more important for people like me.

But does that mean you can only really defend yourself if someone grabs you first?

When you're blind you get used to following cues from others but not all teachers or guides have the patience or are in the habit of vocalizing that much detail. It helped that Tatsuo was my friend.

Depends. A sighted person can get hit unexpectedly if they don't realize someone is winding up to fight. If I heard someone getting angry and approaching, felt them in my personal space, I'd know to be on my guard.

That still sounds pretty terrifying. I hope you didn't get into any sort of situations that required you to use what you've learned.

I can't imagine that someone would be cruel enough to pick on a blind man in the first place, but it's been getting kind of dangerous lately in Recolle.

Trickery is more common. Most don't consider violence because like many people they see a disability and think "weak."
