I know that's a heavy question, so full disclosure: personally, I do it because I assume anything that promising has to have a massive catch that'll trip me up later, and it's never worth finding out if the good will balance it out.

I do know.
That's part of my objection to this old canard about always acting because you're more likely to regret what you haven't done than what you have. If you're under the sway of those sorts of thoughts, inaction can save something that action is more likely to destroy.
