Is this still a matter on which you can't support them? Because if so, they deserve to know that.

You're not a bad person, I can understand the urge to tell that sort of lie, but its impact will be worse the longer you go without clearing things up.

Except that I behaved very badly - not just badly, I behaved cruelly to the first person I ever loved, and involved other people who didn't know the full weight of what they were doing. That goes beyond a single lie.
