...There are several ways that question can be answered, but I'm fairly sure all answers lead back to "questionable decisions were made by several people, none of whom seemed to doubt those decisions at any point, for some reason."

As most would. I do wish you luck with that much, at least.

As for the first part, the short version is a combination of "horrible god complexes" and "brainwashing children never ends well for anyone, and I've no idea why people continued to try to do it."
