As long as the changes were being made to our memories, it was plausible to argue that this was some sort of hypnosis, something done by Retrospec to our brains. However:

1) The experiment to disconnect from electronics that may be affected by Retrospec returned no results. We still felt the effects while disconnected.

2) This "shrinking" and the holes in reality cannot be explained by hypnosis. They are very real.

At what point do we begin to question the fabric of reality itself?

It's worth noting that it does not rule that out as a cause, merely that it rules out continued exposure as necessary.
Perhaps one exposure to Retrospec is all that is needed for its effect to take root.

There are people who are no longer active on Retrospec though, right? People who moved away, etc. Does anyone know if they still feel the effects?

No, I don't. Know, that is.
It's an interesting thought, though. My experiment would predict that nothing would happen, and yet...
Hm. For that matter, isn't it odd that everyone using the app lives in one city?

Maybe they wanted to limit the beta to the city where they're headquartered! (Though honestly I think it's a social experiment: will a group of people on the same app in the same city start hanging out together in person? What if they're stalked by the app's developers? Something like that, haha!)

But someone should test it out! I don't know anyone who lost access to the app or else I'd ask myself.

Were it not for some of the more unusual events of the past few months, I would have accepted your premise as entirely possible.
That feels entirely too benign now... or at least small-minded.

The twist is that, when we do meet up in person, one of us is an ax murderer going by the pseudonym Jim Halloway, who poisons all of his victims with hallucinogens before picking them off one by one. We have to figure out which one of us is actually the psycho stalker before he successfully wipes us all out.

Honestly, what is happening is so strange, I'd believe just about anything with a plausible sounding theory at this point. Horror movie plot? Sure, why not!

Though I promise I'm not an ax murderer. Or Jim.

At the risk of sounding like a cliche:

I'm pretty sure Jim would have no problem telling everyone who he was.

He's been fairly reclusive thus far.
If that's the case, I'd be surprised nobody's met him yet.

I mean, he didn't have a problem telling everyone that he was stalking them... but if people haven't actually seen him offline, then maybe I'm wrong. Either he's very good or very full of it?

I don't know anyone who's seen him in person.
It's possibly that he's lying, or, as you said, very good at it.
Or that he's not stalking us in person.

But if he's not stalking us in person, how is he stalking us? I don't think he's hacking security cameras from around the city because I definitely got some pictures in place where there were no cameras!

Woah, really? Are those real? How are we supposed to find and stop him if he's using something like that?!

I didn't say he was. It was merely a theory.
Thus far, I'm not aware of any actual examples of the technology.
But surely it's more logical than an invisible cameraman following us around and being undeterred by locked doors and windows?

Honestly, I think my sense of what is and isn't logical has gotten skewed after all of this. I really can't tell if tiny drones or invisible stalkers or... camera ghosts, or anything like that is THAT absurd.

Exactly! So how do you rule out what is and isn't plausible any more? We may never know the answer! And that's terrifying!

I'm not sure.
But I also don't intend to dismiss the concept of logic entirely, tempting though it may be.

Well, I guess eventually we'll start to notice a pattern and figure out the limits of what CAN'T happen, but as for the list of things that can:
-They can change our eye or hair color, or even what languages we understand.
-They can make us all tiny, and even worse, make it so no one else thinks it's weird.
-They can retcon an entire species.
-They can apparently follow us around without us seeing.

I mean, what's the logic here? Is there really anything you can think of that they probably can't do, if they can do any of that?
