[ Matt shows up at Derek's doorstep not long afterwards. It's almost as if he dashed out the door all excited or something. Huh. ]

Alright, where is this owl?

[Derek stands there with the door open with an amused look on his face.]

Hey Derek, how have you been?

I've been swell, Matt. You?

[Derek moves out of the door way so Matt can enter his apartment.]

It's in my room.

[ Matt doesn't know his way around Derek's apartment the way he does Tatsuo's yet so he keeps his cane with him as he walks inside. He also wants to be extra careful not to bump into the cat (or now the owl). ]

New theory about Retrospec: they're going to send us pets to try getting on our good side. Said pets may or may not be actual real animals.

Are you wanting a pet now or something?

My room is in the back. You're going you're going to need to go around the recliner, then the bar stools, and then the dining room chairs. Sorry, it's an interesting floor plan.

[Derek slowly follow behind Matt as Matt makes is way to the other side of the apartment.]

No pet plans. I'm not going to stick Mary with taking care of an animal every time I have to work late.

[ Still he's suspiciously excited about meeting the animal in Derek's room. Assuming it's an actual animal. He makes his way carefully ahead and around the furniture. ]

Lead the way.

[ Once they're past the dining room chairs he steps aside to let Derek take the lead. ]

[Derek walks into his bedroom and walks over to stand near the owl, which is perched on his night stand. The owl looks at him and hoots quietly. As if he knew what the owl was saying, Derek starts speaking to the owl.]

That's my friend Matt. He's blind, so please be nice to him.

[The own hooted in response. Derek looks over at Matt in the door way.]

My owl is located at your 10 o'clock, but you need to mind my bed, which will be in your way. I'm standing right next to it actually.

I'm thinking of naming it Bronte.

[ Matt grins the moment he hears the owl. The way it seems to reply to what Derek says makes it even more unbelievable. He steps in from the doorway and over towards where Derek was standing, then he turns towards the owl. ]

Hello Bronte. Is Derek making you feel at home?

[Bronte quietly hoots, ruffles it's feathers, and moves around a bit on the night stand. Derek grins.]

I think Bronte just said, "He will do." But I'm not sure. I don't consider myself someone versed in communicating with owls.

I think understanding just every other word or so counts as impressive. You didn't tell me you two were holding conversations.

[ He turns to Bronte again. ]

So Bronte, by chance do you remember anything from before you found yourself here at this apartment?

[Bronte doesn't make a sound and just stares at Matt.]

What else do you do with a pet? I talk to Blaise all the time.

[Noticing Bronte's look at Matt, Derek's forehead creases.]

Uh, Matt, I think it's glaring at you. And don't expect me to understand what it's trying to tell you, usually I just make whatever shit I want up.

I wouldn't know, I haven't had a pet before. Is that how it works?

[ He's half tempted to joke that the owl is glaring at him because he's on to its secret but it's hardly worth it. Instead he rubs the back of his neck and tries smiling at Bronte ]

Sorry! I've been desperate for answers so I ask everyone I can about Retrospec.

[Derek snorts and Matt's answer.]

How about next time question someone who can actually speak a human tongue?

Do you want to pet him? He's actually much nicer than Blaise. Bronte actually lets strangers touch him as long as they are gentle. I actually don't know if Bronte is a guy, I'm just going to assume Bronte is a guy until I actually find out.

I'm not about to underestimate the intelligence of animals. Maybe we'll get answers from something other than human. [ Shrug. Retrospec makes little sense. He'll try anything once or twice. ]

Is it- is it alright with Bronte if I touch him? [ Oh he likes the idea, his smile says everything. He's not about to touch the owl if he doesn't want it though. ]

[Derek smirks and walks over to Bronte and scratches it on the head.]

Is it alright if Matt pets you? I'm sure he'll be very gentle? You're kind of his first owl.

[Bronte softly hoots.]

I think he's OK with it Matt. Come here, I'll can guide your hand.

[ Matt lifts one hand and offers it to Derek, all the while attempting not to look too excited. ]

[Derek grabs Matt's outstretched arm by the wrist and slowly guides Matt's hand to rest on the shoulder of Bronte.]

OK Matt, you're touching Bronte's shoulder. How does it feel to touch your first owl?

Feather soft?

[ He jokes and grins, mouth slightly open in unconcealed awe and delight. ]

Amazing. I can't believe Retrospec sent you this guy. Definitely beats one of those odd swords. I don't think I've touched a bird since I was... a preteen maybe?

[Derek is greatly amused as he watches Matt pet his new friend.]

How did that come about? And what kind of bird were you petting?

[ ooc: I couldn't resist. mwahahaha ]

Summer camp trip. It was some kind of falcon? It was another bird of prey, trained for hunting -falconry! That's it.

[ He nods to himself, when the word comes to him. ]

The owner let us gently touch its back. They weren't actually there for us kids, they just happened to be hunting in a nearby field and my friend and I were walking by the falconer's car when they were getting ready to leave.

[ He chuckles. ]

We never caught the bird's name so for the rest of the trip we kept calling it the "Millennium Falcon" and of course the falconer was "Han Solo."

[Derek chuckles at Matt's story.]

So which bird is cooler? Millennium Falcon or Bronte?

[For saying that, Bronte angrily hoots at Derek.]

Bronte. He knows how to wave and he's extra smart.

[ Not like Matt would open himself up to a pecking if he thought differently. ]
