I know parents and stuff are always saying to be careful with the oven, but toasters are supposed to be so easy a kid can do it.

they are. think about how many people in recolle have toasters.
this is what, three fires out of how many thousands of uses?

ovens are driers cause way more fires than toasters. i mean, sure, it looks bad, but fires always do.
