Please feel free to use this post as a network mingle. Every toplevel can be considered a new post, and threadjacking is permitted. No NPC response will be given. Usernames are the character's full real AU names, not aliases or chosen nicknames or usernames, and seemed to have filled themselves in; nothing characters do can change or obscure their names currently. Characters who have been in game for one month will find they can now change their profile pictures; newcomers are locked into their first choice.

Upon opening this entry at all, characters will find themselves spammed with notifications and strange glitched texts until they make some sort of suggestion for a new application feature on the Retrospec app. This can range from a personalized friends list to a watermelon image gallery to a watergun charging station. It doesn't have to make sense or be useful - it just has to be a suggestion, at which point the application will return to normal.

Hitori Togusa Using language as a personality test for a culture. I like it.
Hitori Togusa Don't know what it says about the Japanese, though. Modern Japanese, that is. As much as we have sayings for observing the world around you, we also seem to have a lot of words for particular states of being disconnected from your environment, too.
true_noir: (Hmmm)

[personal profile] true_noir 2017-03-02 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Chloe Bouchard Perhaps it says that people in Japan feel disconnected somehow?
Chloe Bouchard I've never really been there, so I wouldn't know what it's like.

Hitori Togusa Well. Take what I was saying earlier into account. Ichi go, ichi e. Even if you're doing the same thing over and over again, the way you're doing it is the most important part. There's a focus on the process, rather than the result. Practice perfectly and the end will come on its own.
Hitori Togusa Great idea for martial arts. Bad idea for commercial success.
Hitori Togusa Add in the focus on tradition, and, what is valued is the act of doing work, but the end results are expected to just happen from work.
Hitori Togusa The disconnection? Comes from about my generation and younger. A bit of pushback against this idea. Thus the words pop up and get used more frequently by younger Japanese.

Chloe Bouchard The way your father's father did it, is good enough for you.
Chloe Bouchard Until the day that it isn't but people aren't quite willing to change?
Chloe Bouchard I imagine that might be a problem.
Chloe Bouchard I lived a very sheltered youth, so I couldn't say much about that.
standalonehuman: (TogusaHunh)

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-03-03 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Hitori Togusa You're still young and you have a lot of time to decide what way of doing things works best for you.
Hitori Togusa Although even an old dog can change its ways.
Hitori Togusa Why did you decide to come to America, then, if you don't mind me asking?
true_noir: (Default)

[personal profile] true_noir 2017-03-03 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Chloe Bouchard Oh, because it is the land of opportunity and freedom, of course.
Chloe Bouchard The American Dream is there for any, after all, and I would like to craft a new life here for myself.
Chloe Bouchard I admit that some of what they say of freedom is true, and some overstated.
Chloe Bouchard But it is still a lovely place to live.
standalonehuman: (TogusaTalk2)

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-03-03 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Hitori Togusa I'll agree with all of that.
Hitori Togusa If you're looking for a new start, there's nowhere better. There were school opportunities here I couldn't get back home in Japan.
Hitori Togusa As much as I mention that work is valued more than success in Japan, work is still very highly valued here.
true_noir: (Default)

[personal profile] true_noir 2017-03-03 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Chloe Bouchard I believe that 'initiative' is the thing that is prized here in many ways.
Chloe Bouchard Doing the work and having initiative to make it your own changes how people view your contributions.
Chloe Bouchard So it is a good place to start anew.
standalonehuman: (TogusaRealization)

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-03-03 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Hitori Togusa Actually, you're right, that's a better way to look at it.
Hitori Togusa Rather than just being a part of a system, or one piece in something greater, the bigger value goes to those who work but individualize it.
Hitori Togusa At least, if I look at the people who have made detective as an example? That seems to be true.
Hitori Togusa So, that leads to the other question. Are you still deciding where to make your mark, or is there a particular job path you are most interested in?
true_noir: (Cloak5)

[personal profile] true_noir 2017-03-03 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Chloe Bouchard There are always downsides, but I agree.
Chloe Bouchard Incentive is a powerful tool, isn't it?
Chloe Bouchard And I already know what I want.
Chloe Bouchard I'm just a degree and a small business loan away.
standalonehuman: (TogusaExamine)

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-03-03 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Hitori Togusa Oh? You definitely have my attention, what sort of business do you plan to open up?
true_noir: (Pretty Flower)

[personal profile] true_noir 2017-03-04 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Chloe Bouchard Perhaps a branch of enchanted blossoms as a florist.
Chloe Bouchard Or perhaps one of the home and garden stores that sells plants for growing.
standalonehuman: (TogusaConcerned)

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-03-04 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Hitori Togusa America really is the land of opportunity, then. You're already getting a chance to work in the field you want to stay in.
Hitori Togusa So would the associated degree to make that dream come true be Botany or Business? A little bit of both?
true_noir: (Smile2)

[personal profile] true_noir 2017-03-04 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Chloe Bouchard Precisely, and I do so love working with plants. Very relaxing.
Chloe Bouchard Business, though I might do a minor in Botany or Art to assist the whole thing.
Chloe Bouchard Knowing plants and growing them is more of a tradecraft than science, you see.
standalonehuman: (TogusaHunh)

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-03-04 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Hitori Togusa Really? That surprises me, I've always thought of it as more of a science. The arrangement of flowers and presentation after they are grown is treated as art. But caring for the plants, themselves?
Hitori Togusa Theoretically, it makes sense. But what makes the difference, then?
true_noir: (Default)

[personal profile] true_noir 2017-03-05 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Chloe Bouchard Yes, one is art, the other science.
Chloe Bouchard But you do not see most farmers going to college to learn the trade, yes?
Chloe Bouchard How to tend to plants is not the same as knowing how a plant grows through science, I expect.
standalonehuman: (TogusaTalk2)

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-03-05 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Hitori Togusa Actually, yes. I don't think Recolle University has an Agricultural Sciences program, but that area of study is something that's spreading a lot. As farming technology has increased, the knowledge base that you need to be a successful farmer requires a higher education for some. Maybe that's another thing changing by generations, though.
Hitori Togusa Your overall point stands, though.
true_noir: (Hmmm)

[personal profile] true_noir 2017-03-06 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
Chloe Bouchard I suppose perhaps the world changing, yes.
Chloe Bouchard though the level needed for the little shops should not be so detailed, as you can tell.
Chloe Bouchard Still, one or the other could be a good minor.
standalonehuman: (TogusaSmirk)

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-03-06 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Hitori Togusa Well, of course. Didn't mean to get pedantic.
Hitori Togusa But it's good that you know so clearly what you want, and what it's going to take to get there.
true_noir: (Pretty Flower)

[personal profile] true_noir 2017-03-06 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Chloe Bouchard A little pedantic is not so bad.
Chloe Bouchard The best dreams are grounded dreams, because they are achievable instead of mere fancy, yes?
Chloe Bouchard I just ahve to get the right selection to do exactly what I truly want and put my mind to it.
Chloe Bouchard My own little empire of roses.
standalonehuman: (TogusaSmile3)

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-03-07 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Hitori Togusa Nothing wrong with a dream, even if it can't be achieved. Gives us something to strive for.
Hitori Togusa But to have a firm foundation, a good plan that you can definitely accomplish? That's something that a lot of people miss out on. Especially at your age.
true_noir: (Cloak15)

[personal profile] true_noir 2017-03-07 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Chloe Bouchard My mother has a good head on her shoulders.
Chloe Bouchard It is part of why she supports my coming to America as she does.
Chloe Bouchard She helped me to plan such decisions out.
standalonehuman: (TogusaSmile)

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-03-10 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Hitori Togusa That's very good to hear. I had the support of my family, as well.
Hitori Togusa And, I've known some people who didn't, so it's far easier to have someone you can lean on.
Hitori Togusa Just for someone who believes in you, if nothing else.
Hitori Togusa Your mother is still in France?
true_noir: (Cloak15)

[personal profile] true_noir 2017-03-10 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Chloe Bouchard Exactly. Her faith in me gives me a great deal of strength on bad days.
Chloe Bouchard It's unfortunate at times that she is indeed still in France.
Chloe Bouchard But, I hope to bring her over to America one day.
Chloe Bouchard I think this would be a good place for her, and I don't like to think of her alone all the time.
standalonehuman: (TogusaConcerned)

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-03-10 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Hitori Togusa Do you have no other family back there that can help her?
Hitori Togusa I guess that's as good a reason as any to be so driven to succeed here.
Hitori Togusa Did you get your love of flowers from her?
