Hello, everyone! As you've probably noticed, we've been having a few problems - I mentioned earlier that something got knocked out of balance, and we had to recalibrate, but in a few days we should be able to drop the emergency measures. Please be aware that there is an incoming storm, class four. General orders for that kind of thing are to report to management for any known threats and follow instructions, but so far what's known is "that might be a little annoying" and "hope it isn't". Theoretically it'll probably be related to the holiday, I think, because a large group of souls focused through the needle of a pin on one thing can sort of shape a thing around them.

That's sort of a really inaccurate way to put it on the technical side of things, but I think it's the easiest way to understand it! At any rate, we'll know more once we're in the thick of things. Please take care as usual; resources aren't exactly what some of you seem to think they are, and we had to expend rather more than usual in the past month or so to keep things with a few of you steady.

Per the mod plotting post, you may use this post to obtain one of this month's freebies! This month's freebie can be earned by turning in a thread on this post that has 5 or more consecutive comments from you with someone new. We define someone new as someone new to the game, or simply someone your character has never tagged before.

Please feel free to use this post as a network mingle. Every toplevel can be considered a new post, and threadjacking is permitted. No NPC response will be given. Usernames are the character's full real AU names, not aliases or chosen nicknames or usernames, and seemed to have filled themselves in; nothing characters do can change or obscure their names currently.

This post is the overflow for the post originally found here! Please feel free to make new toplevels or simply shift your threads over.

Not very much, since we live together, and that's usually a closer arrangement than friends. We see each other almost every day. Most people I barely talk to once a week. Or month. Or several months.

I feel like there's some way to apply a mathematical formula to this, but it's not quite coming together. Like, multiplying that level of surprise by the level of surprised you'd be if the most distant of your acquaintances turned out to consider you a friend, and then dividing that by the number of people you know...

[personal profile] compendiem 2018-02-05 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
There's probably a model for it, since all these things factor into friendship, but I wouldn't know how to go about it either. But as an estimate, that would be a low level of surprise multiplied by a high level of surprise divided by a large number of people...

Assuming surprise has no units, that gives me a small number of inverse friends. I think that's about right.
floret: (of my distant friends)

[personal profile] floret 2018-02-05 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, it's even worse than that! I was imagining the surprise levels as fractional amounts. You'd end up with no more than a hundredth or so of a friend.

I can't leave you with so few, so I suppose we should just multiply the surprise by the number of acquaintances instead...
Is there another factor in there that we're forgetting? Is there a friendship constant?

[personal profile] compendiem 2018-02-05 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't have to do that for me. You can't fudge numbers to get me more friends. That's unethical? Or something. It would be a lie.
floret: (where does this mean world)

[personal profile] floret 2018-02-05 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't be a hero, Minato! It's my fault you've lost all but 1 to 3 percent of a friend. You have to let me try to make it right.

There's no time to waste, so tell me: How many people do you know?

[personal profile] compendiem 2018-02-05 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Um. Uh... Maybe twenty people? Thirty as a high estimate.
floret: (we burned them in the parking lot)

[personal profile] floret 2018-02-06 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
You have between 11 and 19 friends. Inclusive, whole numbers only.

[personal profile] compendiem 2018-02-06 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
...Not going to lie, that sounds like a dauntingly high number.
floret: (should i feel like one of them?)

[personal profile] floret 2018-02-06 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
But think of the courage you've already shown by facing the results head-on instead of inquiring about my methodology!

[personal profile] compendiem 2018-02-06 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
It took so much courage. I don't have enough left.
floret: (we pulled the draft files out)

[personal profile] floret 2018-02-06 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
That's fine. It takes a while if your base modifier is low, but courage regenerates over time. Certain consumables and resting at a campfire give a rate up.

Also, they are mostly just casual friends. You might end up bartering rides to the airport, but you probably won't have to die for them or anything.

[personal profile] compendiem 2018-02-06 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
That's a relief. I think I'll take it easy for a couple of days to let my courage replenish itself. Maybe work on it a little throughout the year so it doesn't decrease so quickly...

What should I eat? I don't think I have today.
floret: (i was thinking about the easy courage)

[personal profile] floret 2018-02-06 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Get a thing of snack cheese and stick some peanuts or almonds into it. If possible, submerge them completely beneath the surface of the cheese.

[personal profile] compendiem 2018-02-06 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Ew. Okay, I'll find some sort of mild, nutty cheese and go for the almonds.
floret: (but i'll push myself up through the dirt)

[personal profile] floret 2018-02-06 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I wouldn't even eat cheese when I was a kid, but now I've acquired the taste, I guess?
They say if you eat something ten times, you'll start to like it.
By the way, you could also just eat anything else you feel like.

[personal profile] compendiem 2018-02-06 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Hm... I think I might melt the cheese over some bread. Grab a handful of almonds alongside that. Then pray.
floret: (and never make amends)

[personal profile] floret 2018-02-06 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
How elegant!

[personal profile] compendiem 2018-02-06 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Also delicious.
floret: (but i'll push myself up through the dirt)

[personal profile] floret 2018-02-06 09:15 am (UTC)(link)
You should add a garnish, then post a picture.
I promise I'll like and share it even if no one else does.

[personal profile] compendiem 2018-02-06 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll find something green, alright. But probably not take a picture. Have you seen my pictures? They always turn out blurry.
floret: (better the files)

[personal profile] floret 2018-02-07 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Then are you going to sketch a portrait of it instead?

[personal profile] compendiem 2018-02-07 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Do I really have to immortalize this meal?
floret: (i had no right)

[personal profile] floret 2018-02-08 10:05 am (UTC)(link)
I won't beg...

[personal profile] compendiem 2018-02-08 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
...I'll send you a blurry phone pic but that's the best I can do.
