Okay, never mind the latter thing...
Any box or bottle with the word "detergent" on it would be a start. There can't be too many places for it to hide, right?

The apartment is quite big and I'm not sure where the household staff usually put things, so... it could take a while.

Right, so it wouldn't be practical to run to the opposite end of a giant house every time you had laundry. At worst, it's a more systematic way to look for something.
