[There's a pause. He remembers that smell, too, but it's not something he wants to admit just yet.]

Was Annabeth with you? [There's no way. There's no way the two memories are connected but he's staring at the sandwich container with distain.] What happened to your leg?

Yeah. She was playing with some weird...toy. And I'm not sure, I hurt it somehow but I don't remember exactly how.

[ probably that's a memory for another time, she figures. ]

[Well...that sounds roughly similar, and the longer he thinks about it the harder it is to ignore. He turns away from both sandwich and Thalia, walking across the apartment to check on the small plant he keeps on a table and just to give himself something to do.]

That was my house in our old life. Pretty sure, anyway, since that was the same house I was arguing with some guy who was supposedly my dad. Gonna guess the cookies are the fault of some woman who was supposedly my mom, too.

[ good job, luke, you're avoiding your best friend in your own place. ]

Do you remember what you were arguing about?

[Yeah he's stupid, what do you want from him?]

...sort of? It's nothing to worry about yet, but whatever happened ended with the three of us leaving my parents behind because my dad was a jerk. At least some things are consistent.

Crappy parents no matter what. [ yay. ] But this was after we were running around burning down buildings or whatever - so why did we go back? Unless just for my leg, I guess.

Of course it was for your leg, why would I let you run around when you're hurt? [The answer's almost automatic.] I don't understand it, but I already know that I wouldn't have gone back there on my own and I wouldn't have taken you two with me.

[A pause.] I'm not sure why, but I'm pretty sure I ran away. So. Who knows? Point is the house smelled like burnt cookies now that I think about it a little more so it's just one more weird memory that apparently happened to both of us.

We obviously knew one another, so there's probably more shit that crossed over to both of us.

[ also: he gets a bit of a glare for having kept the argument memory from her wtf luke? ]

If you and I met when we were kids, and I remember being in that house when I was a teenager, we at least knew each other for a couple of years before all of that happened. As far as I can figure anyway. That's a couple of years worth of bullshit that probably happened to both of us.

[Ignoring that glare! In fact, he just grins instead.] I think I would've preferred the burnt cookies instead. Maybe there's more coming for me than I thought.

So we're just missing some in-between stuff. Unless you're just not sharing that, either.

[ SAYS THE GIRL WHO REMEMBERS HER HUNTERS' INVITE, BUT. ]

The fact that you keep bringing stuff up as "oh, right, that"? Some of it you're clearly remembering at the time, but the rest of it?

I already told you that stuff like that isn't important, so don't worry about it. All right? It's just...[He waves a hand.] It doesn't matter, it's bullshit anyway. Annabeth's already starting to drive herself crazy trying to figure out what's happening here and I need to make sure she doesn't completely lose her mind.

[So, that's to say, he has to make sure Thalia doesn't fall in the same pit and he's also slowly losing his mind. This is fine.]

And I'll tell you that you don't get to make that kind of decision for me.

[ like. annabeth? sure, maybe. BUT THALIA ISN'T HIS KID SISTER? ]

Do you trust me? [Where is this going.]

Don't try to pull that. [ she is STUDYING TO BE A LAWYER, LUKE? ] Trusting you and not being okay with you making decisions for me are not mutually exclusive.

Will you just answer the question instead of arguing with me? I know that's your MO, but I'm serious.

[ she will also punch him if he informs her that means she should let him make her decisions for her. ]

[And he'll turn finally to approach her again, standing in front of her which is probably a huge mistake. He gives her a contemplative look before sighing quietly.]

Okay. Then trust me when I say that I'll tell you everything that I think is actually important and that the rest of this is irrelevant. All right?

[ hahaha that's a huge mistake. thalia smiles briefly and punches him in the nose. ]

What the fuck, Grace? [His hand instinctually comes up to catch her wrist before she can pull all the way back, the other hand covering his nose.] That was not what this was about!

It was! You're trying to treat me like your kid sister, you asshole. And I wouldn't be all right with that even if I were your kid sister.

You don't get it! Look I'm just saying there's no point in sharing useless bullshit that doesn't mean anything so will you just chill out?

But you're the one who decides if it means anything, and I'm not sure your metric works with mine here!

[He looks like he's debating on yelling about his point, inhaling deeply before he lets his shoulders sag and he lets go of her wrist.]
