LOADING...OVERFLOW

Hello Users,

For those of you who are new: Welcome to Retrospec™, the last social media network you will ever need. You are one of the few selected to test this exciting new platform based on our cutting-edge algorithms. Membership is not currently open to the public. However, we hope you will come to see how useful Retrospec™ is, given time. We have for your use a variety of features such as text, voice, video, and image posts. We encourage you to explore our many options.

For all, new and old: Please be advised that should you go above and beyond the call of duty for Mr. Halloway's little game in the coming days, there may be a reward granted or information given. 100% completion would be the goal for that, should you have an interest. If you have no interest in the matter, please feel free to carry on as usual.

R&D will not be handling further communiques for this month, or possibly the next few months. This should not, of course, have any impact on your usage of Retrospec™.

The first milestone for the second of the colors lost has been met, and accordingly we have diverted resources to fix what could be fixed. R&D has alerted me that a bigger loss may occur in the near future, and I would advise you to be careful, though I am afraid neither they nor I can be much more detailed than that.

Finally, I would like to extend congratulations to those of you who have now reached your sixth month. We hope you will continue to accept our assistance in these trying times.

Thank you for your patience,

Janet Wiseman

As of this post green fruits and flowers of this color regain their pigment. (Note: this is not all plants. This is just for flowers and fruits!)

Please feel free to use this post as a network mingle. Every toplevel can be considered a new post, and threadjacking is permitted. No NPC response will be given. Usernames are the character's full real AU names, not aliases or chosen nicknames or usernames, and seemed to have filled themselves in; nothing characters do can change or obscure their names currently. Any new characters will find that the first photo they upload is locked as their profile picture for the rest of the month. Characters who have been in game since February will find their profiles now have a 6 months badge. It does absolutely nothing of note.

This post is an overflow from the original post here. Feel free to either carry over threads from there or create entirely new ones.

Katherine Lutece I can honestly say I've never played that before.
Katherine Lutece Though I suppose it's an apt simile.
Katherine Lutece The problem is I don't think there's anything we can really do about it other than sit and wait for the inevitable. Unless you can think of something I'm not?

David Jones It's fun when you've really got the room for it.
David Jones But I do agree there's not a lot we can do. There just isn't enough information to aptly prepare for anything that could occur.
David Jones Which is probably the more frustrating part of all this

[personal profile] abovethefold 2017-07-10 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Katherine Lutece It is. There's no way of knowing anything's about to happen until you wake up in a sea of bedding and a pen is bigger than you are.
Katherine Lutece Speaking of which, I don't think I ever asked. How did you handle all of that?
seizedtheday: ([001])

[personal profile] seizedtheday 2017-07-17 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
David Jones Poorly
David Jones I’m sure I spent more time running for my life than being where I needed to be

Katherine Lutece Running for your life? Oh, no, Davey; did you run into many bugs?
Katherine Lutece It's too bad we didn't know each other yet. I would have offered to give you a ride to and from campus if you'd needed it.

Katherine Lutece I can't even begin to imagine a world where someone's existence could be reduced to a keystroke... how would something like that even be possible?
Katherine Lutece If they killed all of us, they wouldn't have anyone left to toy with. I doubt they'd do that.

Katherine Lutece That's the one part I have the least amount of trouble believing. It's simple enough to be registered as a legitimate business; depending on which model they follow it may be as simple as sending in a piece of paperwork and a one-time fee.
Katherine Lutece Unfortunately, it takes a lot more than putting "Inc." to excuse the sort of stuff these people are doing.
Katherine Lutece I take it you just received this app?
saburai: (ashamed ♙ courtesy and honor)

[personal profile] saburai 2017-07-06 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, it just downloaded itself on my phone last night.

I suppose I should consider myself lucky that it hasn't happened until now.

[personal profile] abovethefold 2017-07-10 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Katherine Lutece You certainly should. I'm just sorry it's happened to you now.
Katherine Lutece I've only been a part of this network for two months and it's thrown everything into chaos. I'm still finding myself bewildered by everything going on, truth be told.
Katherine Lutece Has anybody given you the short version of everything going on?

[Please say yes, please say yes, Katherine can only tell her so much and she can't explain it herself...]
saburai: (unsure ♙ to strive for improvement)

I think I've gotten the gist of it, as hard as it is to believe.

Katherine Lutece It is hard to believe, even while it's happening to you.
Katherine Lutece Still, feel free to contact me if you need anything. I don't know how helpful I'll be, but I can certainly try.

Katherine Lutece The only "lunatics" I see here are the ones responsible for all of this for thinking that people would just lie down and accept it.
Katherine Lutece I just wish we knew more about their motivations. I can't help thinking that there's more to the picture that we aren't seeing.
Katherine Lutece I suppose it's obvious there is, but what is it they aren't telling us? And why? Is it because they're just playing with us and know we'd be even angrier? Or is it because something else is afoot and they're trying to hide the severity of things beneath levity?

Amelia Wagner This letter does read like a HR department desperately trying to sweep some mess under the rug.
Amelia Wagner As if no one would notice some mass hallucination on this scale.

[She's definitely not ready to accept the world always having two fewer colors and she just hadn't noticed until now.]
abovethefold: (pic#11293916)

[personal profile] abovethefold 2017-07-10 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Katherine Lutece Unfortunately, I think we're already way beyond that. After all, horses were exchanged for chocobos and we were none the wiser... when I was young I rode regularly. You wouldn't think that I'd have forgotten all those years of lessons, but for some reason I did. Until I was added to this network in May, I would have told you it was chocobos I'd been showing my entire life.
Katherine Lutece But if they allowed or wanted us to notice that, then how big is this thing that they're trying to hide?
Katherine Lutece What's bigger than a mass hallucination like the loss of blues and greens...?

Katherine Lutece You aren't the only one. What's causing these losses in the first place? We all assumed Retrospec, but if that's the case, why are they allowing their R&D team to keep doing whatever it is that started it?
Katherine Lutece If we're talking a bigger loss than that of two entire colors... what's next, entire senses? Maybe we should all start brushing up on sign language, just in case.
b0mbshell: (032)

[personal profile] b0mbshell 2017-07-06 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
Kazuhira Miller So the cracks in the world and those flowers are external, right? But the colors must be internal?
Kazuhira Miller I know reality is up for debate here, but it does feel like maybe both are true.

[Hell, he doesn't know. He's not the physicist in the conversation.]
abovethefold: (pic#11293917)

[personal profile] abovethefold 2017-07-10 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Katherine Lutece The cracks in the world?
Katherine Lutece I'm afraid it's my cousin who's the physicist, Mr. Miller, not me. Can you elaborate on what you mean?

[Rosalind would probably understand entirely, but this is flying right over her head at the moment. External versus internal changes--does he mean changes that affect the world and changes that affect them personally? Or...?]
b0mbshell: (009)

[personal profile] b0mbshell 2017-07-12 08:44 am (UTC)(link)
Kazuhira Miller Okay, think of it this way. The grass still has to be using sunlight, right? So it's gotta be green. We just can't see it.
Kazuhira Miller So that's on us. It's in our head.
Kazuhira Miller But the cracks in the world, the flowers, the Retrospec building, those are physical, tangible things.
abovethefold: (pic#11293916)

[personal profile] abovethefold 2017-07-13 02:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Katherine Lutece Thank you, that explanation makes a lot more sense. I'm reasonably sure I pointed out something similar about grass last month.
Katherine Lutece So with this logic, something like remembering horses instead of chocobos would be an internal change, but dancing fruit would be an external change, right?
Katherine Lutece I do have another question, though. You've mentioned "cracks in the world" a couple times now. Can you explain what you mean by that? Classing it as external would mean that you've seen literal "cracks" in this world, but I haven't seen anything like that.

Katherine Lutece No legal ones, at any rate. Although we've got a number of law enforcement officers and at least two licensed lawyers on this network that I'm aware of (though neither are actively practicing), we still would need a judge even capable of seeing Retrospec in order to think about legal action.
Katherine Lutece When Retrospec first installed itself on your phone, did you try asking anybody else about it? If you did, you might have noticed that somehow, people that don't have access to it can't see it.
Katherine Lutece I mentioned my father before. He's a lawyer, and so I was asking him about invasion of privacy when we started receiving surveillance footage of ourselves from someone working there... but when I handed him my phone to look at the photo, the app crashed and deleted itself from my phone. When I took it back, it had reinstalled and functioned normally again.
Katherine Lutece It's almost like it somehow knows who's handling it, and changes in response.
Katherine Lutece The law is ill-equipped to deal with such an intelligent code, as much as I hate to admit it.

Aranea Highwind I’m just gonna sit back and take your word on that.
Aranea Highwind You seem to know what you’re talking about…
Aranea Highwind And I definitely don’t.
Aranea Highwind Still, must be frustrating to not to be able to hail the bullets of justice on Jim & Janet.
Aranea Highwind Somewhere, those two must be cackling away.

Katherine Lutece I've been studying law for years now. If there were any way we could bring Retrospec to the courtroom, I'm certain someone would have done so by now.
Katherine Lutece And yes, it's just as frustrating as you'd imagine. I can't say I like a world where there's no way to hold somebody accountable for their crimes!
Katherine Lutece I'm not the sort of person to work outside of the law and, as it is, it seems as though that's the only option people have for learning anything.

Aranea Highwind The main problem I've seen is that nobody I've spoken with seems to actually know much about Retrospec.
Aranea Highwind And what they do know? Feel free to insert a bunch of seemingly incoherent gibberish that doesn't barely makes sense right here.
Aranea Highwind Eventually, we'll gain a better understanding. And with that, more power over our lives and less of a feeling of hopelessness.
Aranea Highwind At least, that's what I hope will happen.
abovethefold: (pic#11293917)

[personal profile] abovethefold 2017-07-13 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Katherine Lutece Optimistically, that's what I hope will happen. However, there are users that have been here since February that still don't have any idea of what's going on.
Katherine Lutece A part of me thinks we should just ignore it all for the time being, until there's enough information to start sorting through... but if we do that, aren't we playing right into their hands and doing what they want?
Katherine Lutece There's also the question of whether or not what they're doing is actually malignant, though I suppose I can only pose that question because my "memories" haven't been too extreme yet.
