Welcome to Retrospec™, the last social media network you will ever need. You are one of the few selected to test this exciting new platform based on our cutting-edge algorithms. Less than two hundred invitations have gone out, and membership is not currently open to the public. However, we hope you will come to see how useful Retrospec™ is, given time. We have for your use a variety of features such as text, voice, video, and image posts. We encourage you to explore our many options.

Please feel free to use this post as a network mingle. Every toplevel can be considered a new post, and threadjacking is permitted. No NPC response will be given. As a reminder, everything besides uploading a profile picture and information was locked until this post. Usernames are the character's full real AU names, not aliases or chosen nicknames or usernames, and seemed to have filled themselves in; nothing characters do can change or obscure their names currently. Oddly, profile pictures still cannot be swapped out at this time, so hopefully you took a good one.

This post is an overflow from the original post here. Feel free to either carry over threads from there or create entirely new ones.

The circumstances surrounding this app are strange. I won't lie nor deny that since that'll be irresponsible of me to do so.

A lot of things prompts red flags to be raised. Being downloaded without any TOS prompts. Being unable to find a way to uninstall the app. Being unable to look for any mentions of this app online.

Individually, its strange. Combined, its sketchy.

[ when she wants to be serious for a moment that calls for it, ainsley can be serious. (despite what some may claim.) as evident by the lack of emojis being scattered across her message and the way she gets to the point. ]

Not to mention installing itself on devices that were turned off.

That's what bothers me most, Ms. Menodora. My tablet was powered off and password locked, but I turned it on just now and the app was already installed.

That shouldn't be possible, should it?

No. That shouldn't be possible.

I'm no tech expert but something like that shouldn't have happened when it was off. Usually, you need to keep your device on while downloading an app since that requires your internet connection.
[ she thinks. like she said she doesn't have a claimed expertise when it comes to technology but she knows enough of it to know some things don't add up here. ]

Right. That's what I was thinking too. I know computers can do diagnostics and stuff while turned off but they're usually in sleep mode.

The batteries in my tablet were dead.

So, I think something really weird is going on.

[ oh… that bit about the batteries turns this to 'strange' to 'eerie, even spooky' in ainsley's opinion. ]

That is strange. That's all but impossible now. Technology has come a long way but that is a difficult thing to explain or reason. [ again, she's not a tech expert but this is ringing alarm bells now. ] Sounds like whoever made this was very determined to make sure this was installed in our devices. No matter what it took.

[It really is, and it’s really bothering Yukiko quite a lot.]

Exactly. And you know that when someone really wants to happen without your permission it’s usually pretty bad. I’d say I’m a little afraid, but that’s a lie. I’m very afraid.

But I’m also curious to see how this plays out. I’m going to start keeping a closer watch on my bank account and such, just to see.

That's a good thing to do while we figure this out.

I suppose switching passwords out for your current accounts on other sites would be wise too. Better safe than sorry.
[ and she had just finally gotten around to remembering how many asterisks she was using in her current one too. if it was for internet safety, however, she'll do it. ]
burningblossoms: (What did you say?)

[personal profile] burningblossoms 2017-02-12 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
Truth. That's very smart. Thank you for reminding me.

I should go do that. Take care, Ms. Menodora!

Take care, Yukiko. Please be safe and let me know if I can help you with anything.
