The writers have been pretty harsh on him lately though.

There hasn't been a lot of reasons for him to be joking around.

I mean, his gimmick resembles jesters of old.
But that's because he wants to make people laugh while also saving them.
But he does have a lot of serious moments too.
Like during the arc where he battles with depression.
