Welcome to Retrospec™, the last social media network you will ever need. You are one of the few selected to test this exciting new platform based on our cutting-edge algorithms. Less than two hundred invitations have gone out, and membership is not currently open to the public. However, we hope you will come to see how useful Retrospec™ is, given time. We have for your use a variety of features such as text, voice, video, and image posts. We encourage you to explore our many options.

Please feel free to use this post as a network mingle. Every toplevel can be considered a new post, and threadjacking is permitted. No NPC response will be given. As a reminder, everything besides uploading a profile picture and information was locked until this post. Usernames are the character's full real AU names, not aliases or chosen nicknames or usernames, and seemed to have filled themselves in; nothing characters do can change or obscure their names currently. Oddly, profile pictures still cannot be swapped out at this time, so hopefully you took a good one.

This post is an overflow from the original post here. Feel free to either carry over threads from there or create entirely new ones.

Ryoji Mochizuki i wouldn't want to find out either!
Ryoji Mochizuki about tasty people, i mean
Ryoji Mochizuki i've seen the freshens gnomes though...
Ryoji Mochizuki generic mass produced gnomes. they're not bad, just part of the same family with a hundred twins
Ryoji Mochizuki maybe an antique shop would be better
Ryoji Mochizuki or when the weather warms up, yard sales when people dig things out for spring cleaning

Sakuya Haibara Exactly. Something with a bit more age or character.
Sakuya Haibara Or at least something with a different color scheme than green outfit and red hat.
Sakuya Haibara Since that's all there seems to be these days.
Sakuya Haibara You want your garden to say it's you, not just that it fits in with the Jones' next door.

Ryoji Mochizuki right! i think some blues and yellows would look nice in a garden
Ryoji Mochizuki maybe pinks or light orange
Ryoji Mochizuki something to brighten up carrot tops and pea pods
Ryoji Mochizuki now that i think about it though
Ryoji Mochizuki there's no reason to stop at gnomes
Ryoji Mochizuki there's plastic flamingos and granite statues
Ryoji Mochizuki the kind that spits out water!

[ what does all this say about him? he likes generic garden decorations ]

Sakuya Haibara There's a lot of green in a garden anyway, unless you're growing colorful flowers on purpose. So some variety is nice.
Sakuya Haibara You just have to make sure you don't end up making it too busy.
Sakuya Haibara Or do, if that's what speaks to you more. I'm not usually into too busy of things.
Sakuya Haibara The flamingos would be an interesting touch, but I really have always wanted some kind of a fountain.
Sakuya Haibara I don't think I have enough room for one, though. I hope you would!

Ryoji Mochizuki i never really thought about what flowers i'd grow or what speaks to me...
Ryoji Mochizuki things that look pretty, or smell nice, or attract hummingbirds!
Ryoji Mochizuki i think i like them all!
Ryoji Mochizuki maybe instead of a fountain, a water bath for birds?
Ryoji Mochizuki if they can enjoy my garden too, that'd make me happy~
Ryoji Mochizuki like flamingos but with all types of birds
Ryoji Mochizuki or i guess since you have a greenhouse, that's hard...

Sakuya Haibara I guess it would also depend upon your plot.
Sakuya Haibara If you had a big enough one you could split between, say, vegetables and flowers.
Sakuya Haibara But if you want something just for utility, it would be best to stick to vegetables as much as possible.
Sakuya Haibara Flower gardens are for an aesthetic. Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course. I keep small beds of flowers, myself.
Sakuya Haibara The birds will bathe in the fountain regardless, trust me on that.
Sakuya Haibara But yes, the greenhouse is mostly for utility rather than for anything else. It keeps the vegetables growing over the winter.
Sakuya Haibara Though make no mistake, it's not a huge greenhouse. Perhaps half the size of a shed. Just enough to put some planters in for the more fickle, long-growing plants.

Ryoji Mochizuki that's true; right now all i have is my window and no actual plot of land
Ryoji Mochizuki so everything's super in the future
Ryoji Mochizuki like my own house with a white picket fence
Ryoji Mochizuki and maybe cherry tomatoes? or goji berries?
Ryoji Mochizuki they're colorful and cute and you can eat them!
Ryoji Mochizuki what about those? what do you think?

[personal profile] blooming_resonance 2017-02-10 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Sakuya Haibara Well, like you were thinking, window boxes are entirely possible
Sakuya Haibara Goji berries... I've never tried those. They're a bit hard to come by in America.
Sakuya Haibara But Cherry Tomatoes are very easy, especially for tomatoes and grow relatively quickly!/font>
Sakuya Haibara They're a good fruit for beginners, too. Much easier than other types of tomatoes.
Sakuya Haibara Since you're talking about the future though, making sure you keep it out of frost is ideal. They're better than other tomatoes, but frost will pretty much instantly kill them, and, well... it's still the dead of winter.

[personal profile] appraiser 2017-02-11 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Ryoji Mochizuki maybe i'll hold off on the tomatoes until spring comes...
Ryoji Mochizuki goji berries though!! you should try goji!!!
Ryoji Mochizuki it can be a little bitter, and has a weird aftertaste, but it's a unique flavor!
Ryoji Mochizuki and goes great in a sweet soup with longan and dates
Ryoji Mochizuki let me see if i can get in touch with one of my host parents to send some over
Ryoji Mochizuki it'll be my thank you to you for all the advice!

Sakuya Haibara Oh, I'm sorry. I've eaten Goji Berries before, just not since I came to America, really.
Sakuya Haibara They're much easier to get in Japan.
Sakuya Haibara I meant the seeds are very hard to get in America to grow your own. Just as the fruit itself is.
Sakuya Haibara But you can send me some, anyway. I wouldn't turn it down :)

[personal profile] appraiser 2017-02-12 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Ryoji Mochizuki oh, lol i got so excited about food that i didn't realize!
Ryoji Mochizuki i'll send you some anyways!
Ryoji Mochizuki on the very very very very rare occasion, i can find the dried fruits in the stores
Ryoji Mochizuki but there's something special about plucking them right off the bush
Ryoji Mochizuki (that something special is trying not to get caught)

[personal profile] blooming_resonance 2017-02-13 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Sakuya Haibara I haven't thought to look, honestly.
Sakuya Haibara Maybe I'll take a peek the next time I think about it at the store.
Sakuya Haibara And if you grow your own, you can't get caught.
Sakuya Haibara You'd only be cheating yourself if you took them before they were ripe, after all.

[personal profile] appraiser 2017-02-13 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Ryoji Mochizuki waiting until they're ripe is the hardest part though...
Ryoji Mochizuki how do you do it?!
Ryoji Mochizuki i remember watching the apricots ripen on the trees
Ryoji Mochizuki and taste testing lots of hard and sour ones until they're finally sugar sweet
Ryoji Mochizuki and then the birds come and it's war!!! ヽ(`◇´)/

Sakuya Haibara Self-control, mostly, I think.
Sakuya Haibara And knowing it'll be better when you let them grow - then you'll have more ripe, sweet fruits instead of less because you ate some when they were sour.
Sakuya Haibara Sometimes it helps to distract the birds, though. Or put cages up.
Sakuya Haibara But that's another advantage to having a greenhouse. The birds can't get in. :)
