Please feel free to use this post as a network mingle. Every toplevel can be considered a new post, and threadjacking is permitted. No NPC response will be given. Usernames are the character's full real AU names, not aliases or chosen nicknames or usernames, and seemed to have filled themselves in; nothing characters do can change or obscure their names currently. Characters who have been in game for one month will find they can now change their profile pictures; newcomers are locked into their first choice.

Upon opening this entry at all, characters will find themselves spammed with notifications and strange glitched texts until they make some sort of suggestion for a new application feature on the Retrospec app. This can range from a personalized friends list to a watermelon image gallery to a watergun charging station. It doesn't have to make sense or be useful - it just has to be a suggestion, at which point the application will return to normal.

Hitori Togusa Isn't there some American saying about assuming something is coming out of error is usually a surer bet than assuming something is coming out of malice?
Hitori Togusa In fairness, even if they aren't trying to be malicious, their shortcuts still have broken a number of laws, so no, we aren't letting this go.

Chloe Bouchard I am not sure? It certainly makes sense, but I don't know their phrases sometimes.
Chloe Bouchard It is occasionally a very confusing language.
Chloe Bouchard But I certainly hope you investigate.
Chloe Bouchard As you said, this can't be legal, either way.

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-03-02 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Hitori Togusa It would be like trying to tell an American 'Ichi-go, Ichi-e.'
Hitori Togusa Some things don't translate well.
true_noir: Aged-Up Commission (Oh?)

[personal profile] true_noir 2017-03-02 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Chloe Bouchard Yes, I think that is likely.
Chloe Bouchard What does that mean, if I may ask?
Chloe Bouchard I do not know japanese.
standalonehuman: (TogusaThoughtful)

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-03-02 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Hitori Togusa Literally, 'one time, one meeting.' Or, 'one moment in time.'
Hitori Togusa The idea is that every moment is unique, even if you are doing something that you have done the same way thousands of times, it is still a different moment than the last.
Hitori Togusa It gets used in things that are very ritualized, such as the movements of the tea ceremony, or a martial artist's kata. But it applies to everything.

Chloe Bouchard Oh, ok. I understand the concept.
Chloe Bouchard I don't know that I understand it quite so much as an experience, but the intent makes sense.
Chloe Bouchard Like going to the same mass every Sunday, same pew, and yet each is slightly different?
standalonehuman: (TogusaSmile3)

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-03-02 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Hitori Togusa Exactly. It's a good example. Philosophically, the saying is to remind us to stay present in the moment, instead of acting on autopilot.
Hitori Togusa You said you were from France, any sayings or concepts that don't quite translate to English that you've run into?

Chloe Bouchard I apologize for this one, as it's a little uncomfortable I'm told.
Chloe Bouchard L’appel du vide - translates as "The Call of the Void"
Chloe Bouchard I am told it sounds meditative, but it is not.
Chloe Bouchard It is the strange sensation you have near a cliff, where you look over the edge and have the sudden urge to jump
Chloe Bouchard Not because you want, but from the vertigo.
Chloe Bouchard I am told that Americans find the phrase strange, and stranger that we have a phrase for it with so few mountains.

I learned something cool today

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-03-02 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Hitori Togusa But that's fascinating. Because I can feel exactly the sensation that you're talking about.
Hitori Togusa When I think about it, my mind wants to replay the idea for me, as if I'm on that ledge.
Hitori Togusa The fact that the French have a saying for such a sensation might be less of a product of their geography and more of a product of being more in touch with those sorts of emotions and sensations?
true_noir: (Peaceful)

^-^ languages are fun

[personal profile] true_noir 2017-03-02 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Chloe Bouchard It may be something like that, yes.
Chloe Bouchard We have many expressions related to romance others do not.
Chloe Bouchard "La douleur exquise" refers to a exquisite pain one can only feel for unrequited love.
Chloe Bouchard It's even seen as a desirable sensation by some.

Re: ^-^ languages are fun

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-03-02 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Hitori Togusa I suppose I should feel lucky that I only understand that one in theory, there's not a memory associated with it. Plenty of books and movies tell the story. But there's not a personal relevance.
Hitori Togusa I suppose it really is the cultural perspective that determines what concepts a people think are the most important to put into words for their language.
true_noir: (Sneaky Smile)

[personal profile] true_noir 2017-03-02 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Chloe Bouchard It is not something that everyone would enjoy, myself included.
Chloe Bouchard But as you say, different cultures will value different things.
Chloe Bouchard I think the French are people of experience and sensation, perhaps?
Chloe Bouchard It would explain how descriptive of such things we can be at times.
standalonehuman: (TogusaThoughtful)

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-03-02 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Hitori Togusa Using language as a personality test for a culture. I like it.
Hitori Togusa Don't know what it says about the Japanese, though. Modern Japanese, that is. As much as we have sayings for observing the world around you, we also seem to have a lot of words for particular states of being disconnected from your environment, too.
true_noir: (Hmmm)

[personal profile] true_noir 2017-03-02 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Chloe Bouchard Perhaps it says that people in Japan feel disconnected somehow?
Chloe Bouchard I've never really been there, so I wouldn't know what it's like.
standalonehuman: (TogusaRealization)

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-03-02 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Hitori Togusa Well. Take what I was saying earlier into account. Ichi go, ichi e. Even if you're doing the same thing over and over again, the way you're doing it is the most important part. There's a focus on the process, rather than the result. Practice perfectly and the end will come on its own.
Hitori Togusa Great idea for martial arts. Bad idea for commercial success.
Hitori Togusa Add in the focus on tradition, and, what is valued is the act of doing work, but the end results are expected to just happen from work.
Hitori Togusa The disconnection? Comes from about my generation and younger. A bit of pushback against this idea. Thus the words pop up and get used more frequently by younger Japanese.

Chloe Bouchard The way your father's father did it, is good enough for you.
Chloe Bouchard Until the day that it isn't but people aren't quite willing to change?
Chloe Bouchard I imagine that might be a problem.
Chloe Bouchard I lived a very sheltered youth, so I couldn't say much about that.
standalonehuman: (TogusaHunh)

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-03-03 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Hitori Togusa You're still young and you have a lot of time to decide what way of doing things works best for you.
Hitori Togusa Although even an old dog can change its ways.
Hitori Togusa Why did you decide to come to America, then, if you don't mind me asking?
true_noir: (Default)

[personal profile] true_noir 2017-03-03 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Chloe Bouchard Oh, because it is the land of opportunity and freedom, of course.
Chloe Bouchard The American Dream is there for any, after all, and I would like to craft a new life here for myself.
Chloe Bouchard I admit that some of what they say of freedom is true, and some overstated.
Chloe Bouchard But it is still a lovely place to live.
standalonehuman: (TogusaTalk2)

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-03-03 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Hitori Togusa I'll agree with all of that.
Hitori Togusa If you're looking for a new start, there's nowhere better. There were school opportunities here I couldn't get back home in Japan.
Hitori Togusa As much as I mention that work is valued more than success in Japan, work is still very highly valued here.
true_noir: (Default)

[personal profile] true_noir 2017-03-03 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Chloe Bouchard I believe that 'initiative' is the thing that is prized here in many ways.
Chloe Bouchard Doing the work and having initiative to make it your own changes how people view your contributions.
Chloe Bouchard So it is a good place to start anew.
standalonehuman: (TogusaRealization)

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-03-03 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Hitori Togusa Actually, you're right, that's a better way to look at it.
Hitori Togusa Rather than just being a part of a system, or one piece in something greater, the bigger value goes to those who work but individualize it.
Hitori Togusa At least, if I look at the people who have made detective as an example? That seems to be true.
Hitori Togusa So, that leads to the other question. Are you still deciding where to make your mark, or is there a particular job path you are most interested in?
true_noir: (Cloak5)

[personal profile] true_noir 2017-03-03 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Chloe Bouchard There are always downsides, but I agree.
Chloe Bouchard Incentive is a powerful tool, isn't it?
Chloe Bouchard And I already know what I want.
Chloe Bouchard I'm just a degree and a small business loan away.
standalonehuman: (TogusaExamine)

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-03-03 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Hitori Togusa Oh? You definitely have my attention, what sort of business do you plan to open up?
true_noir: (Pretty Flower)

[personal profile] true_noir 2017-03-04 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Chloe Bouchard Perhaps a branch of enchanted blossoms as a florist.
Chloe Bouchard Or perhaps one of the home and garden stores that sells plants for growing.
standalonehuman: (TogusaConcerned)

[personal profile] standalonehuman 2017-03-04 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Hitori Togusa America really is the land of opportunity, then. You're already getting a chance to work in the field you want to stay in.
Hitori Togusa So would the associated degree to make that dream come true be Botany or Business? A little bit of both?
