listen i speak from personal experience when i say that if a kid wants to get into some shit then there aint no environment thats gonna keep em from it
better to give em room to make their crap decisions and learn from it if you ask me

Experience is the best way to learn, I'll give you that. But I'd still rather try to set them straight the first time so they don't have to deal with the fallout.

Then again, I'm not exactly an unbiased opinion.

most you can do as an authority figure is make sure they know better than to make EXTREMELY crap decisions and then just take your losses on the other dumb shit they do

Got out of the military afterwards and didn't get to see him on the other side for over nine years. Didn't even know he was in jail until I got out.

Our commanding officer at the time wasn't exactly the kind of guy you'd go out drinking with. The mission was the only thing that mattered, in his opinion.

No arguments here. Don't know what happened to him after my discharge, nor do I care.

But anyway. There wasn't much to do. They tried him as an adult and by the time he got out he was one. Hard not to learn your lesson that way.

not the easiest way to do it but honestly its the most effective
when you never get caught you think youre hot shit until somebody gets hurt
same time though you cant just tell kids not to do something and expect them to actually NOT do it just because you said so even when youre right
most you can do is teach em not to make the REALLY BAD mistakes and hope the ones they do make are the ones they bounce back from
i mean i could be talking out of my ass here but thats how i look at it

maybe teach your kid not to do coke off strippers btw i cant recommend it

Just telling them not to do something isn't enough, I'll give you that, but telling them why helps. Kids think they're invincible. That consequences only matter to people who aren't them. Sometimes you need to remind them that they're just as vulnerable as the rest of us.

Better to try that than have them waste some of the best years of their life.

I'd not the kind of father who gives up on his son just because he did something stupid when he was young. I'm glad he's out and trying to straighten out his life. Doesn't mean I'm not upset I missed out on quite a bit of his life.

[Of course, that's not the only thing he's upset about. Not that he has any plans to tell Jack that. Or...anyone really. Just gonna keep all these feelings bottled up inside. Totally fine and healthy.]
