As a reminder, everything besides uploading a profile picture and information was locked until this post. Usernames are the character's full real AU names, not aliases or chosen nicknames or usernames, and seemed to have filled themselves in; nothing characters do can change or obscure their names currently. Oddly, profile pictures still cannot be swapped out at this time, so hopefully you took a good one.

How do I opt out of this? Isn't it an invasion of privacy to display my real name as my username?

Maybe if you legally change your given name you can get around it that way.

This is quite unusual even for our social media obsessed society. There's certain steps that would need to be taken to protect users from certain dangers.

Identity theft is one of these possible dangers.

It may work off the principle that, given how hard it is to erase oneself from the internet in the modern day, it would be simpler to just start with as few barriers to honest communication as possible? I admit I'm not terribly enthused either, but it could be worse.

Indeed. I'm not in a position where I can keep myself particularly private, but I do what little I can. Still, perhaps something positive can come of this? I'm still wondering what that might be, but I'm holding out hope.

I tried to find contact information of the moderators of the app to ask just that but I couldn't find any. There's no info on them on Google either.
