If we're talking about in English, it's five, seven, then five syllables in three lines. In Japanese, it's a little more complicated, though.

I'll try my best. Basically, haikus are characterized by three qualities: The essence is the cutting-- known as kiru-- which is represented by a juxtaposition of two images or ideas, along with a kireji (translated as "cutting word") between them. To be a little more specific about kireji, they're basically the special category of words that are used in certain types of poetry. I can give a few common examples. か (pronounced as ka) for example is used for emphasis, and usually indicates a question. かな (pronounced as kana) is also used for emphasis, and is usually found at the end of a poem and indicates wonder There's also some verbal suffixes, adjectival suffixes, or other kireji that are used to emphasize words. Are you following me so far? I can talk about the other two qualities after this.

so basically: it's like adding italicization or underscores to certain words to emphasis the parts important to the haiku except they are actual words than just indications?
