(no subject)

Happy New Years, users.

I'll cut to the chase; the barrier we instilled a few months ago is decaying quickly and we're sorting through the new data as fast as we can. This barrier was originally designed to contain a rogue error. There are several of you who have taken care of this issue and from here we will handle the rest...thank you. The influx of data will help us decode our next steps.

As mentioned, we've spent December tracing several magical sources that are coming up in our readings. We're doing the best we can to trace Clarence--Mr. Vanderweele, and corral the effects he's altering in the city. I believe we're ready to tear down the firewall and begin exploring further. If our information is correct, we're really breaking the boundaries of the layers we've discovered lately! It's exciting, don't you think?

The only information I can offer is that we will need you to be strong no matter what happens. We believe things have changed outside of security measures we've set in place, though we will need more data to understand the best way to stabilize the city from his control. We understand if you cannot and do not wish to help, but please know we're doing everything we can.

Please take care.

Hitori Togusa Thanks, Joanne. And, I guess, thanks for finally being upfront about what's going on. You've helped equip us. We'll be careful on our end.
Hitori Togusa The question still stands, though, of how much more do we have to break through before we can get to where you guys are?

Hitori Togusa Either way, hell of a time for this to show up.

[For those of you who visit the town's temple, that is an omikuji, or New Year's fortune, and Togusa has pulled the worst possible luck.]

that's as good a confirmation as any that vanderweele's not only alive but also escaped
you couldn't have given us a wanted poster with his photo on it in case any of us run into him in the wild?

also 'exciting' is a funny word for 'we're all guinea pigs for new magic-science boundaries no one's ever tested out before'

I'm not sure if I can call any of this 'exciting'. Being told to 'stay strong' without telling us what we're supposed to expect is more worrisome than anything else.

On the subject of 'magical sources' though... how many of us here have abilities that one would consider 'magic'? That is, drawing or channeling power from oneself to do things that can't be explained by scientific means. Derek had mentioned the idea of the 'sources' they're looking for possibly being people, so it might be good to get a count in that regard.

See, I can't tell if Joanne is worried or excited. Barrier going down= bad. Clarence alive= not great. Tear down the fire wall= exciting? Be strong no matter what happens? What was I doing before Joanne? What? Do not ruin my new year this way!

Also, when did we know Clarence Vanderweele was alive? I had my suspicions and I heard it from someone else, but when was this discovered?

Strangely when they say it's exciting, I just find myself feeling terrified at what it might entail...

Oh, and question:
Earlier today, while taking a break from magic practice I played my violin
And it made a bunch of flowers appear
And birds. Singing bluebirds.

Has that happened to anyone else? Please tell me it has.

[No, it has not]

Funny definition of the word 'exciting', if you ask me. You sound like my college professor who thought a report on Heart of Darkness was fun

It's not

It's really not

Anyone want to clear up who this Vanderwheele guy is? Not sure if I count as newbie but the name sure hasn't been brought up before

[Attached is a selfie of Shuji, May, and Sakura all dressed up in their fancy kimono. Shuji's included.

There's another one with him and Wesker, who is presumably not wearing a kimono.]

As requested, new years selfies. Also got the worst possible luck on my fortune, but at this point I think I just assume that I'll have to deal with some bullshit. Looks like I was right!

Humor me for a little: what was your first dream in the new year?

Wait. So we have one barrier decaying, but we're ready to tear down another one? Something tells me that's not the brightest idea anyone has ever had...

Then again, it's not like I have any idea what half of this even means... I just know that the word "exciting" has never sent a chill down my spine so fast before.

Wait...a "rouge error"?

As opposed to the regular run of the mill, people transforming into monsters and memories completely being screwed with errors?

Also, Clarence Vanderwheel...the name seems familiar...He was a major dick back in the day or something wasn't he?

So, things around here are getting 'exciting' once again, are they?

While normally I'm one of those encouraging everyone to keep their heads and not run screaming into the night fearing whatever impending calamity is surely about to hit us all in the face, I think by now we can all skip that little formality. Those that are going to scream will scream.

Let those of us that are looking forward to the challenge invite whatever's coming to us.

You know, I'm guessing that we're supposed to assume whatever changes this Vanderweele fellow is enacting are, in the long run, worse than anything you've managed to pull on us thus far. Do we have any information on what it is that he's doing and why, or are we just going in blind here?

So... not to distract from Joanne's big announcement but...

Has anyone else found they're able to teleport? Because I think I can? But I can't seem to do it again?

[Rinka, completely misconstruing her experience with the rings last month and her first memory of phasing.]

Also. I'm looking for a new job. Even with the holidays my last job kept cutting my hours, so... I bounced. Probably shouldn't have until I had something else lined up, but yeah.

Magical sources? And the layers? But. Of course, I'll do what I can to help. With enough of us helping out, I'm sure we'll figure it out and everything will be alright. I mean, a firewall is like protection to do with computers, right? Not a literal wall of fire.

At least last month we got a bit of a break? Sort of. I mean, the mistlebats being back was kinda unexpected but it really was quieter in comparison to some months with the app? I hope everyone had a great time over the holidays! But as long as Joanne-san and the others are doing their best, so should we!

[...Ever the optimist, of course.]

Admittedly, I'm not the most computer savvy, but firewalls are supposed to protect something... right? I'm kind of wondering if Joanne is speaking figuratively here and what side of the firewall are we on?

Cool. Thanks for the confirmation of something most of us figured out literally months ago because he's the only one who would bother attacking us to see how strong we are.

Still NO idea what data we're gathering for you or how it's helping, but if what I heard about all of us being born for this </paramore> is true then maybe us just being here is helping. Either way, offer still stands. You know what I'm good at. Let's do this.

Well. At least last month was relatively peaceful. Thanks for the update Joanne.

I'm not all that wild about 'breaking the boundaries of the layers,' but we'll see how that goes.

Weapons Practice will be held as much as possible this month, provided things aren't overly disruptive.

While it's refreshing to see a more forward and honest approach to disseminating information from your organization, really, at this point, I think the only thing that will truly satisfy me is being presented that man's neck.

Everything else is secondary.

More layer nonsense again? And wait, Clarence? He's the guy that like, founded the company or something, isn't he? I remember he was important somehow at least.

But I am. Debating how much I agree with the 'exciting' part. Every time you guys say that, things seem to get more crazy than usual. I am really doubting this will be as 'exciting' in a good way like she seems to think.

Still, I guess we don't exactly have much choice. Kind of have to help them, right? I mean. If we don't that probably, usually, means we're screwed. This app stuff better not mess too much with me finishing this last year of school.

hey guys i know this all feels like

super big. crushingly big. like there's too much to handle. so i wanted to play a song for everyone to try and lift our spirits heading to the new year.

this one's called "True Believers" by the Bouncing Souls.

no need to do the whole like/subscribe stuff this time, it feels kinda hollow to ask for it in the fact of what's ahead of this, but i hope this made at least one person feel better out there.

From the second we’re born, we’re free. No chains or cells change that.
The only person who can decide if you’re worthy of your life is you.
The only people who write our stories are ourselves.
The only fate we have are the ones we choose.

Vanderweele has another thing coming.
